There's part of the problem with oiled filters. Too much oil is a problem, too little oil means dirt is entering your intake, a bigger problem IMO.



Filter choice also matters where you drive. Southwest deserts are very dusty, so there's no way I'm ever going back to an oiled filter while I live here.

FWIW I have a K&N filter and an inexpensive paper filter. After cleaning and oiling the K&N, I shelf it in the garage for a week or so to reduce chance of excess oil getting where it shouldn’t. In the meantime, I throw the paper filter in.

I had no issues prior to or after incorporating this practice, but it was recommended to me by my mechanic.
