Re: Engine Mods for the V10 Ford what have you done

its been awhile since i have been on SMF

been using the van now over a year now....
i have not had any major issues....

i did pick up a used AFE air intake but found out my van most be an early V10 .. my van has the bigger TPS ... and AFE dont make a mount for it... as any modtified one ????

next month we will be head to some races and i now think its time for the programmer....

you has the best price on Mikes 5 star????

Re: Engine Mods for the V10 Ford what have you done

I've got a 2010 RB V10 and a UJ 6" lift with 4.10's and 35" tires in the works. Should weigh about 9,000lbs when full. Which 5Star tune should I go for? I talked to them and they suggested a single 87 RV tune but I know a couple of people here have the 91 performance. I live on the front range in Colorado, it will see moderate wheeling and plenty of time on the interstate too going both east to Iowa and to the west coast occasionally.

Thoughts on which tunes I should get would be appreciated!

I run the 91 from 5 Star and like what it does for the van.....

Unless he's changed things you get 3 tunes with the tuner, so try them out. Honestly, I would recommend 87 performance, for when you want to run regular, 91 or 93 performance for when you want to spend more on higher octane fuel. If you tow, get an 87 tow tune too. It just takes about 2 minutes to change your tune. I've done it while fueling the van many times.

Do you then run premium fuel?

Re: Engine Mods for the V10 Ford what have you done

I'm not too versed in how octane rating performs at different altitudes. I'm here on Colorado's front range. My 2010 V10 build will hopefully be below 9k pounds, 4x4 with 35" tires and 4.10's. Chris at UJOR says the 87 RV tune they suggested sounds good. I guess I'd rather use the cheaper gas...can't imagine there would be any night and day difference in the first place. Maybe I'll hold out and drive it for a week or two after the 4x4 conversion and then put in the tune to see what happens. First major road trip will be to Iowa for a shakedown drive and to see family. Easy cruising.

Re: Engine Mods for the V10 Ford what have you done

Well I put almost 2,000 miles on the van with the UJOR 4x4 conversion and no tune. Going east with a light tailwind and driving just under 70mph I got 13mpg - RPMs were at about 1850. Driving west in to a steady 10-15mph headwind at 72mph I got 9-11mpg - RPMs were just a hair over 2,000.

Driving up the mountains I'm sure I'm getting about 10mpg - just a couple short trips up steep narrow canyon roads so far. It has plenty of power and I can get it going faster than I'd want to drive it on those turns and I'm definitely not putting the pedal down.

Shift points seem to be smooth and come when I'd expect them. Never have I said, "I wish it wasn't shifting then." The van is running lighter by 1,000lbs than it will be when I'm done working on it.

Going to call 5 Star tomorrow and talk specifics again. I'll share these experiences and see what they say.
