Funny, that was my expression as well when I discovered the same thing.

Are you going D60 or D70? Same width or one of the wider axles? Just curious.

Phil
What width are stock vs wider? Does it mean you don't need wheel spacers?

Are all of these 8 x 6.5" PCD hubs?

If I have a D60 SF 3.73 tracloc and want to go either D60FF or D70FF what exactly do I need? I would assume I wouldn't see a 3.73 in a FF (more 4.1s?) so I would need to swap my center? Would I also need the 1.5" axles?
I went with a D60 FF non LSD with 4:10's from a 00' E350 van. I believe the width is the same and the bolt pattern is the same (8 on 6.5 SMB's are this pattern). Here's where it gets funky...
The FF is a 32 spline 1.38 inch dia. shaft.( This seems counterintuitive but remember the FF axle shaft doesn't support weight, it only transmits torque.)
The SF is a 35 spline 1.5 inch dia. shaft
My plan is to order custom 1.5 inch shafts ($305) and throw my D60 Trac-Loc carrier in the FF with these shafts. Should be pretty darn bulletproof for about $2k

Re: Finding a full floater

For that you wouldn't have had to change the shock mounts, either, right? (because it came from a van).

I don't think I need a D70, but having a FF would be huge piece of mind. So I could transplant my center/LSD into it. The 1.5" axles seem optional....?

Re: Finding a full floater

So my axle arrived in town at a local 4x4 shop (Barney Brother's Off Road). I had a bit of a surprise when I went to check it out and verify a few things. It was supposed to be a D60 FF, 4:10 with an open diff. What I ended up with is a Dana 70 FF 4:10 with limited slip! Sweet! The only thing I should have to do is re-locate the shock mounts. Another plus is I won't need to use spacers anymore as the width is a bit wider than the semi-float.

Re: Finding a full floater

Congrats! Sounds like you ended up with the same thing I have. As you mention, the shock tabs should be the only mod needed to put it under your van. I moved my old brakes over too since they were a known quantity.

Re: Finding a full floater

Thanks!
Well, since I don't have stands tall enough or a place to work on the van inside, I am having a local shop do the axle swap today. Also getting some 315/75/16 Toyo Open Country MT's thrown on as well.

Re: Finding a full floater

Wish I'd had done the 315's...enjoy! Tom's (Zeta) looked great on his van. Maybe next time for me.

Re: Finding a full floater

The Toyos do look mean!
BTW, for anyone that is looking for axles for their van:
Get the BOM (Bill of Materials) # off of the potential donor axle. It is found on a tag on the diff cover or stamped on the housing. It is a six digit number sometimes followed by a dash and another number.
Example of my donor axle: 606523-2 (Dana 70 4:10 Power-Lock from an E350 cutaway).
This Dana catalog has all the BOM numbers and is very useful to determine what axle you have, what traction device you have, as well as the ratio you have.
http://www2.dana.com/pdf/X510-2.pdf

Also, thanks again to Chris (UJOINT) for doing the footwork and shipping me the axle!

PS: Anyone looking for rear wheel spacers?
