What was your recommendation for a high amp alternator before, from the boating world if I remember right? (I get you confused with Chance because you two are among my favorite electrical posters along with Scalf, and daveb and I know I am forgetting others here).

Not cheap but you could power the neighborhood if needed. I remember SMB Qatari van video made mention of providing backup power for hospitals. I wonder if this is what they installed?
Starts at 12 KW? Impressive.

Of course anything that depends on engine to remain running for AC power kind of defeats the purpose since at that point we can just use the vehicle's AC. At least in the context of my original question for this thread in order to keep the van cool for sleeping on an occassional basis when shore power is not available.

I guess the Roadtrek Etrek system is an improvement over idling all night in that you'd only have to run the engine a fraction of the time to charge the huge battery bank in a shorter period. It also solves the problem for those who may not feel comfortable going to sleep in a vehicle with the engine running. Makes a lot of sense in a way but I'm not sure it justifies the cost and weight of that much battery when idling will do. And when a good monitor can keep us safe.

Ample Power Company, or Balmar Marine. I had one from Balmar.
