Dang, I wish we had a 'Redhead' for all of the crappy parts that can ONLY be found remanufactured. It blows my mind in dealing with a few problems on my new Transit that there are no NEW Ford parts, they are all reman'd! Seriously, no kidding. You cannot get a NEW torque converter for a Transit and they are failing at an alarming rate. Ford will keep your van for a month while they send your OEM one off to get reman'd. It begs the question, what exactly are they putting in new vans? Magic dust? Aren't they making the damn things? I hate corporations. Inevitably we all lose while the CEO plays golf.

Hello and I see my thread has been a very busy place! Spoke with Redhead- asked about using a truck box with the 4x4 conversion on a super duty... HE recommended the reman 2011 OEM will handle Hellbetty. Have several in stock. (OK dont you all order them all up now!)

ANYHOW I will be in Columbus OH next week with my grandson, and I decided I really should call the shop in Plain City OH who has been in biz for a long time. I visited there in May because they sell 4x4 accessories and I like the place, good rep too.

Outcome is I agreed with the Plain City OH manager for him to go over the suspension/steering Monday morning before I order a Redhead gearbox. Only thing is I am skeered it will be even more expensive! But I like the idea of getting a second opinion, especially since OH shop manager has put Redhead gearboxes in several Fords.

Will keep yall posted on progress.

BTW: Don't HOLD BACK Eric! Tell us how you really feel!

Great info especially for mechanical underinformed peeps like myself.

The Ohio shop was in agreement on needing steering box, was glad I had done my research on the Redhead, and wants to add steering stabilizer, which I had planned to ask about anyhow after scouring some forum photos here. He is specifying dual fox and I’m not totally sure how his design varies from Agile Off Roads spec. On other projects I’ve had 2 shops say Sure Thing Ann we will install what you order after showing them product and instructions from awesome suppliers I have found through this forum. This current shop is a 4x4 and restoration shop tho and does great work too.

Anyhow, box+SS+alignment= $ approaching my new average shop cost for HellBetty. Fingers crossed anything additional such as control arm will be kept low. I know I know bite my tongue! .

I Really need to return to more time camping than researching & talking to mechanics, body shops, glass shops ETC 🐯 And paint faster so I can start selling paintings again. Y’know-To pay for my Van habit.

Gearbox Scheduled for Tuesday

iirc, agile offers both 1 and 2 stabilizer options, but i could be wrong. i have the single and am happy with it thus far. was a noticeable improvement over my worn out rancho.

report back on how you like the redhead. always like seeing real world reviews

i cant quite commit to get my box ordered/replaced just yet. having only one income with the wife still outta work delays purchases like this longer than id like, but mama comes first

I would expect a single steering damper to be adequate unless there are other underlying issues. You often see big trucks with massive lifts and huge tires running multiple dampers, but that just masks bigger problems with steering geometry or worn components.

Wobble, Wander, and the like

OK well before this thread degrades any further the following work has been performed on HellBetty:

1. New Redhead gearbox installed-Outcome: steering behaves

2. Steering stabilized installed- Outcome: steering wheel ‘death wobble’ tamed

3. Alignment- Done

4. Drove about 250 miles over Midwest highways with pavement repairs with my son either riding shotgun or driving, listening to him go over (and over and over ) how i shouldn’t expect my ride quality to improve very much seeing as how I have a solid axle-

Today I revisited the job parameters with Stefan the 4x4 shop owner to make sure I had not missed any suggested repairs. I agreed to call Quigley for some info. Stan with Quigley informed me that there is no adjustable control arm available, verified that I had the correct the alignment specs and etc. Then i made a trip to 4x4 shop to discuss and have Stefan look over the new double-Fox shock steering stabilizer.

SO the Control arm ends are worn but not enough to need replacing, the wander is outcome of the lift on a van chassis with a solid axle with caster that cannot be changed and any other work to remedy that would be done on conjecture.

He likes Quigley as being quality work but with the limitations mentioned above. He offered to remove the steering stabilizer he installed but I’m going to sleep on it.

Has anyone else tamed their steering wander?
Anyone else had better outcome from Johns AOR single-Fox shock SS?

Thanks

Is your Quigely front end leaf-spring? (I'm assuming so....?)

Of so......IIRC, caster CAN be changed on solid-axle front ends that are on leaf springs ---- it requires placing a wedge-shaped shim in between the axle perch and the spring leaf where they bolt together.

Effectively you are rotating the entire axle slightly rearward (top of axle rotates slightly rearward) on its axis, so as to add caster.

Seems to me there's been some forum threads where members have discussed this (and accomplished it) before.
