Bryanlaws, did you have to do the complicated flushing and simultaneous replacement of the tranny fluid that the Amsoil rep described? It sounded so complicated I'm not sure I can find someone to do it here in our small town. I'm not sure the Ford dealer would do it with Amsoil tranny fluid either.

Am I to understand an owner of a SMB 4x4 built during this period would have to experience the problem, somehow come to understand they need to contact SMB about it, and then contact the right SMB person to determine if their build is in the correct date range? (As opposed to SMB notifing owners "If you experience this problem it might be something we can fix")

OMFG. At the risk of getting off topic... no I'm going to start a new topic.

I'm noticing that the klunk is intermittent, and is gone now. I wonder if these transmissions have controllers that 'learn' your driving habits and reconfigure themselves. I took a road trip last weekend, and the klunk was gone. maybe that happens when you do a lot of hiway miles. Around town, I rarely get on the freeway, and the thing may know it?!

tranny flush

Yes, they did do the flush and replace service. I guess I'm lucky that we have a mechanic here in the LA area that is beginning to become a bit of a SMB and AMSOil specialist with so many of them hailing from the SoCal area.

However, I don't think the concept of a "transmission flush" is all that foreign to auto mechanics. Its a standard practice I believe. However, whether or not there are special steps that need to be adhered to that are specific to SMB's I can't really comment on. Many others here that know more than I do.

One thing that I will mention is that in my 2006 6.0 PSD EB, there are actually two (2) transmission filters. If you decide to go the replacement route with your transmission fluid, make sure that they replace BOTH of the filters if present. On mine there was one in the pan (standard) and one outside of the pan that looked like a mini-oil filter.

Hope that helps, sorry I'm not more informed. I bought it to flog it, not wrench it.

Good LA-based SMB Mechanic

The mechanic I speak of is:
Bob's Brake & Alignment
4141 Redondo Beach Blvd
Lawndale, CA 90260
Phone: (310) 370-1475

If you call, talk to Hubert. He is becoming quite the expert on not only SMB's but also he's an AMSOil dealer and technician.

Hubert is a great guy, very nice and they seem to do great work.

He also seems to have a "hot line" to the mechanics over at SMB and is able to get an answer quicker than I have been able to in some cases.

To date, he's done all my AMSOil work, replaced ALL the fluids in the van, re-aligned it and replaced some o-rings in the Atlas transfer case which may/may not have been leaking. Its worth noting that the first re-alignment they did was "off" and he said "bring it back in and we'll make it right". Which they did by identifying that my ball joints were wearing out and now I'm in contact with SMB to sort it out.

I would recommend anyone in the LA area to take their rig to Hubert. The more people that go, the better they understand the vans.

Just found this thread and have to give another thumbs up for Hubert. He has done all the service on my van and I've been very pleased with the quality of the service and his knowledge. Keep the SMB business coming his way.

Just curious how or if you got this sorted out with SMB. I suspect I'll need to replace mine in the next year or so.

Thanks
Rob
