Re: Is a 5.4 enough?

I was looking for a V-10 but found a great '06 EB 5.4 and bought it. I thought about doing the 4wd conversion (through Advanced 4X4 here in SLC) but always wondered if the 5.4 was enough. After reading all the comments, I think this thread has just cost me $10K!

Re: Is a 5.4 enough?

Just a little follow up for those considering a rig with a 5.4. I have had absolutely no problems with the power output driving in the mountains. More is always a good thing, but this thing gets by fine. I tow two snowmobiles and don't bog down below 55 up some fairly steep grades. I'm averaging about 11 mpg and around 9 when I'm towing.
If you are considering a 5.4, don't hesitate. It get's the job done.

Re: Is a 5.4 enough?

I find no trouble with my 5.4, before or after the lift. I had 3.73 gears turning 265/75-16 tires at the start and now run 4.88 gears and 37/13.5-20's.

I pull a 18' Haulmark Snowmachine trailer often in the winter.

Oh and I Plow with it too.

Is a 5.4 enough?

I think people are scared of revving these gassers. As if technology hasn't changed with them as with everything else. Somewhere between 2500 & 4500 RPM is where they need to run if you want to see what they can do.

Re: Is a 5.4 enough?

I would agree with all of the above , I have had three E-150 Club Wagons 2 wheel drives that we use for work , all went well over 150,000 miles with little or no problems . The most recent one was a 2005 that would pull my 26 foot Whaler Outrage over the Grapevine better than my existing 6.0 TD in fact I gave the boat to my youngest son because of this ! Great vehicles

Re: Is a 5.4 enough?

Hey Guys, I just added a SCT tune from Mike at 5 Star. My 5.4 feels like a new beast. I'm moving 11,500 pounds, six BFG All Terrain TA's 235/85R16 and a ton of wind resistance. I'e got the 5R110W tansmission and a 2009 Quigley conversion. The major changes are with the transmission. In tow haul I'm no longer using 5th gear and the torque converter is staying locked up nearly all the time. The transmission gear hunting is gone, the torque converter spin long before downshift is gone. The rig used to drop in to 5th as soon as possible, then you would have to gun it to get it back to fourth or third to keep moving up any grade. Not anymore, it stays in 4th and hums right along. The motor and tranny seem very, very happy. I'll get back to you with gas mileage figures as soon as I get some good data.

Is a 5.4 enough?

Does it really feel "like 2 cylinders were added overnight" as 5star's website states?

Re: Is a 5.4 enough?

Silver, In my application it does feel like I added two cylinders. My unit with the slightly taller tires and the stock program in the tranny wasn't turning enough revs. I always felt like I was fighting with the tranny, trying to keep it in fourth and out of overdrive. The truck now feels awesome at 55mph to 65mph. It's running right in the torque sweet spot. For me the tune is one of the best things I've done to the truck. I'll have fuel data in a week or two.
