To the original poster, did you have the code reader with you on the trip or did you use it when you got home?
I carry a small cheap code reader in my tow van along with some tools, voltmeter, continuity test light, all sorts of tapes, magnetic spare tow lights and extra head light and tail light bulbs. Yes, I'm a little anal.

Yes I had a code reader and used it while I was on the trip. It showed a mis fire in number 3 which means that the coil pack had gone bad. My problem was that I was so convinced it was the transmission that I did not replace the coil. I could have, the part and tools were in the van. Changed the coil at home and the transmission issue went away. Missed a great trip because I was not thinking clearly.
