Leak (oil or transmission) between engine and trans.

I just rolled in from EXPO and found a puddle under my van. It has never leaked before. The leak seems to be coming from directly behind the oil pan. There is a black piece with a little outlet that seems to be dropping oil. I have attached picture. It is the 7.3. Any suggestions?

Re: Leak (oil or transmission) between engine and trans.

After looking again, it seems that it is leaking from the transmission. I see is leaking around the transmission pan. I am guessing this is not good. I had been noticing a knock when I would come to a stop, but could not remember if that was normal. Does this mean what I think it means?

Re: Leak (oil or transmission) between engine and trans.

pull off the doghouse and look in the valley of the motor. apparently theres a few o-rings that go bad over time and start leaking into that valley. once it puddles or you park on an angle, whats in the valley leaks out. i thought my rear main seal was going out, but a trip to a gent that keeps a fleet of 7.3 vans going busted out his scope and started probing around the bay of my van and pointed out that they were leaking. the rings are cents a piece, but kinda tricky to get to. mechanic suggested buying a tool called a crows foot for easier access.

not saying thats your particular issue, but one to check out. it may be a cheaper fix than your assuming. i also saw some points about this same fix on http://www.powerstrokehelp.com. vid here:http://powerstrokehelp.com/7.3liter/leaks/1of2.asp

Re: Leak (oil or transmission) between engine and trans.

Well got The Yeti over to my mechanic. They pulled the shield over the trans and rear of engine. It is engine oil not trans oil. It seems that a rear seal on the engine is the problem. Anyone else have this and what is evolved?

Re: Leak (oil or transmission) between engine and trans.

Lot of discussion on this on the 7.3 PSD forum on ford-trucks.com
Usually it seems that its not the rear main seal (although it looks like that is where it is coming from). Rather, it is the leaking from the valley between the valve covers. Take a look over there. If I get a chance, I will edit this with a link for you.

Re: Leak (oil or transmission) between engine and trans.

Well finally got The Yeti back. It was the leak at the high pressure hoses. My mechanic recommended replacing both lines and couplings. The Y at the turbo needed replace because it broke trying to get a bolt out. Also replaces all the gaskets on turbo. Oil and filter change was done as well as changing air filters(very dirty). The Air intake hose had a tear in it, so it was replaced. Out the door was $1700.

I feel he was being honest, so it seems like an ok price. I guess I am wondering if the lines needed replaced or just the seals. There is some piece of mind to new hoses on a high pressure system.
