I'll post what I get later on.

I don't do too much winter driving so don't have a good handle on TFT in those conditions but generally with the TruCool and my 6.0 my temps range from 150 to 190F. Pulling a trailer, going over a pass with a long grade, or slow off road crawling and it may hit 200F. 205F is the highest I've observed. 230F is when you really need to be concerned or back it off.

I'm still pretty happy with this mod for sure. I hit 275F going over IMogene Pass once. That was the last straw.

Final Temp Post

Well, I finally got to make a trip with the new trans cooler. Headed out to Death Valley for a week.
Most of my trip was on 395 from Reno to DV. Air temps on 395 ran from 40 to 65 and trans temps stayed in the mid 150's. Went up a bit climbing passes.
Highest I saw was going over Towne Pass on 190. Long fairly steep climb and OAT (outside air temp) was around 75. Trans temp finally got up to 180 as I topped the pass.
Crawling steep grades on dirt roads with 80 OAT would see trans temps in mid 170's.
When I went over Towne Pass last November with similar OAT my trans got up to the mid 230's.
BIG improvement!!

Just thot folks might want a report on what the TruCool did for me.

Thanks for all the help everyone.

I use the Tru-Cool Max Transmission Oil Cooler 40,000 GVW Low Pressure Drop (LPD47391)

Very happy with it and only regret is that I didn't get it sooner.

Thanks for this great thread. Went out to my van today to install my 6.0 31 Cooler only to realize they designed the 7.3 trucks entirely different than the 7.3 vans!

Should be able to flip the parts pretty easily and trade up for a Tru-Cool Max... looks easy to install!

Thanks for blazing the trail.

Well my tranny temp sensor started intermittently reading 8500 degrees last trip out. I had to climb a 10 mile steep grade at 20mph and I hit 230 on tft doing it. Sooo... new e450 pan, temp sensor and a true cool. I decided to jb weld the 1/2 Barb over the top of the 3/8 Barb. I’m going to 90 off the passenger side and use a barb to Barb reducer and call it good.

How does that E450 pan compare to a 4x4 4R100 pan (assuming this is on the 2001 7.3 listed in your signature?) It looks like it might be even deeper? Any idea how much capacity it added?

On my last trip I had some elevated transmission temps (200f or so) while doing long, steep climbs off road, and in high ambient temps (80s to low 90s). While that's not super bad, in a couple weeks I'm headed to Fallon Nv for a race and ambient temps are going to be much higher, quite possibly even over 100f. I've had a Mishimoto transmission cooler on the shelf for a couple years and decided it was time to mount it. It comes with a fan designed to pull air through the coils, but I need it to push air. Mishimoto said reversing the polarity will result in reduced air flow due to the design of the blades, but I was able to reverse the fan on the motor and then turn it backwards, and it works great. The cooler fits perfectly under the core support, and its quite close to the factory transmission cooler hoses. My plan is to cut one of the hoses and clamp the ends on to the fittings on the cooler which are 3/8 tube with a rolled hose retainer ridge. Before I cut the hose, I'd like to know if the inside diameter is close to 3/8 ID. The OD is a bit over 5/8 (.685) Can anyone tell me what the inside diameter of the stock transmission cooler hose is? 2001 E250 5.4 with a 4r70.

Keeping on the tru-cool theme, I’d like to ask the knowledgeable members here their thoughts on using the Tru-cool H7B as a transmission cooler. For me, I think the big LPD47391 is overkill. The benefits I see to the H7B are that stacked plate design is theoretically more efficient than plate/fin design, and the 11x11” size is more easily mounted. The HB7 uses 1/2” npt fittings, and 1/2” npt to 1/2” hose barb fittings are readily available.

The image below is from the tru-cool catalog.

Bad Idea? Am I missing anything?
