Miles per gallon? Differences between V8 vs V10 + Hightop vs Poptop

Assume four different FORD SMB E350's Extended body vans the same in every way except:

Van 1 is Ford E350 V8 with High top
Van 2 is Ford E350 V8 with Poptop
Van 3 is Ford E350 V10 with High top
Van 4 is Ford E350 V10 with Pop top

None of the above are 4x4s, all have normal radial tires (for highway).

What is reasonable to expect in terms of mpg traveling on the highway at 70 miles per hour?

I know there are all kinds of variables that could come into play (driving up & over the Rockies, V10 being much more capable of pulling trailer full of toys, etc., but let's just assume a normally weighted van traveling cross country.

You forgot to include what gear ratio.
I know you excluded 4x4 but here is real life for a couple of rigs:

2003 v10 EB Passrnger Quadvan TTB conversion which with 3" lift max. 265/75-16 Yokohama Geolander, 3.73 gearing:
Trip from San Francisco to Loveland, CO and back via Hwy 80 pretty much around 70mph and mostly empty interior:
Trip out Completely stock exterior, stock roof - 14.9mpg
Trip back CCV 17" High Top ( Pop Top) - 14.9mpg
Normal up and down I5 between SF and SoCal for that stock van with load was around 13.2

Current SMB EB50 Contempo fixed top, V10, 2WD, 4:10, 245/75/16 stock tires, no bumpers or lift - I5 back and forth to SoCal medium load 12.8 mpg avg'g mid 60mph.

Our RB van has a 5.4l V8, 4.10 rear end, and 24" fixed top. Before the top, it got over 15 mpg on I5 in California and it wasn't broken in yet. Now it gets about 14 mpg at 60k miles.

These figures are from the onboard computer, I have never actually calculated mileage. Range is more important, we can count on well over 400 miles.

I have E250 EB with a 5.4 and 3.73 gears, aero hightop, 2WD. Once we get above 65MPH mileage goes down, so we generally keep it at 65 or under.

We probably average 13.5-14MPG, sometimes a bit higher if we have a tail wind or are driving at 60, sometimes lower if we're in a hurry.

I typically run premium which for me gives a bit better mileage, proportionally better mileage than the extra cost for the premium.

Current '08 E350 extended high top V10 3.73 gear 2 WD, 10-11 mpg.

Had a '13 Chevrolet Express 3500 with 6.0 and 3.55 gear extended wheelbase, 12-14 mpg.

Had a '13 Ford E350 Class C with V10 4.10 gear, 8-10 mpg.

Also have a gmc 3500 with 6.0 and 4.11 4wd srw reg cab gets 12-14 mpg on good reg gas. The good premium will give me another 1 mpg but doesn’t justify the extra .60 cents s gallon if my math was correct.

And it’s been my experience the difference between s good alignment and bad can be 1-2 mpg.

For a high-roof, the extra frontal area usually means the V8 and V10 will use about the same amount of fuel. You're probably looking at around 11-12 MPG with either motor.

V8 has an advantage with a pop-top, although the roof still isn't very clean, so I'd plan on 14-15 MPG. A bone stock E350 stock roof, no rack, can see about 16-17 lightly loaded.

I have an RB 4x4 with pop top, 4.1 gears and a V10. At 70 mph I get about 9 mpg. With these vans going slower really helps with mpg. I got 13 mpg on a tank when I drove around 45 mph on most of the tank.
