Re: My First Tire Delamination
It's the big heavy live axles..? Lots of unsprung weight. That's what I've assumed.

Re: My First Tire Delamination
Plenty of stories out there about BFG ATs in D rating flying apart on SMBs, It happened to me. If your going to stick to BFGs, go with an E rated tire. Even though the math works out for load rating on the Ds, it seems the BFGs at least, have a history of failures in a D rating on our rigs. Better to play it safe and just stick to an E rated tire no matter which tire you choose.

Re: My First Tire Delamination
I've driven 30 miles on the highway with 8 psi, van loaded, after a weekend at the dunes. I don't think that running low pressure intermittently should cause de-lamination like that.

Well, yes, that might be safer, but jeez the ride is so bad with softer D-rated tires, I can't imagine switching to firmer E-rated tires. I'm thinking if I get properly wide rims and always dispose of my tires at the 5-year mark I'll be OK.

It was a harder ride on the Es. I ran 55 in town for short trips and 70-75 on the highway. I too decided to just buy new after ~5 years. My tires saw a lot of weekends aired down to 20 psi 4wheeling on the beach. It was on the ride home from a weekend on the beach after 5 years on the tires that I had a driver's front come apart. I got lucky with minor body damage.

Is this what you're talking about?
According to my van service records, these were purchased in 2007...
I've always done 5-tire rotations on my pickup so when I wanted to change tire type / brand when they wore out I wasn't stuck with one new looking one to get rid of.
It's too bad my van's spare is also from 2007- it still has tits on it!

I agree. I really think its those BFG AT Ds. A search on this forum will show several examples.

Re: My First Tire Delamination
Sorry for your damage, thanks for the info/good advice.
The same thing happened to me. I was running BFG AT D rated tires, and the passenger rear suffered tread separation. It pinched my exhaust closed too and I had to pry it open. Age may have been a factor, as I believe it was about 7 years old. At any rate, I'm running E rated tires going forward.

Re: My First Tire Delamination
Now in addition to my concern about my 2005 6.0 PSD (which has performed faithfully for 60k miles) I gotta' worry about my freakin' tires on stock OEM 7 inch rims?
I'm about ready to replace the tires, any thoughts about what might fit on the stock Ford 7 / 16 rims, or what kind of plain 7.5 vanilla rims I might get to accommodate the BFG AT's? I'm not a fancy wheel kinda guy.
Geez, I just want The Van to take me out to nice places, and get me back without having to call AAA...
thanks...
Tom

Re: My First Tire Delamination
Not stock rims by any means but I was probably one of the worst offenders of D BFG's being over weight yet never had an issue. Not to say it a failure wasn't just around the corner though. As far as ride, E's are worse than D's but Deaver springs made my van feel like D's at 40 LBS. Going from 285's to 315's made it even softer. I'm sure each van would be different but I don't air down as often now.
