Re: New Smoke

Cylinder contribution measures injector function through crankshaft acceleration. As long as cranking cylinder contribution is even, running cylinder contribution is a reliable way to measure injector function, since all diesels need is compression and fuel.

The stretch bolts on stock motors do have the benefit that the head will lift if you hydro lock, otherwise you just push stuff out the bottom (by stuff, I mean rods).

Re: New Smoke

If it is any consolation, the crate motor will come with all the latest upgrades - including new injectors. I'm happy with my new 6.0 (but not the dent it put in my wallet).

Sorry to hear about that. Keep us posted as to what was the cause.

Re: New Smoke

I'll let everyone know what happens as the work progresses. Waiting for the new engine right now.
My engine had around 82K on it. I might have been able to save it if I had been somewhere where I could have shut it down and gotten a tow. Just wasn't possible where I was. But then again, no telling what damage had been done by the time I noticed all the smoke.
Is there any way to tell which injector is acting up when the cylinder contribution test says all is OK?

Re: New Smoke

You could use an IR thermometer to compare the temperature of each cylinder's exhaust runner on the manifolds--the bad one will be higher. I've thought of having an EGT gauge for each bank of cylinders to narrow it down. But all that aside, you can't do anything about it. If the injector is stuck open, all you can do is replace it.

Re: New Smoke

Having a 6.0 PSD is like saving for a kids college education. All owners need to put some $'s aside every month for when it your time to rebuild it. Start now and get that balance to $10K. That will at least get you started.

Re: New Smoke

SO what is a new crate motor going for these days? Mine is headed to the shop tomorrow and I'm sweating it. I've had some light smoke since I installed that HV FICM. Ed's FICM swore that the motor would not smoke with the 40HP tune but it did and continues even after adding Hot Shot and what not. Hopefully it will be resolved W/O having to pull the motor but I'd like to know what a new engine cost compared to having mine total rebuilt.

Re: New Smoke

I've been quoted around $10.2 - $10.5 for a long block. Oh, you want it installed....

Re: New Smoke

The new Ford engine (long block with injectors, oil/EGR coolers, etc) was $10,215. Labor depends on many factors.

Re: New Smoke

Seems it's more like saving for two kids college. Yikes.
