Question Odd Noise At Certain Times - E350 6.0L Diesel

This is a hard one to describe. My van (2010 E-230 6.0L Diesel) is running great, no Check Engine light or codes on the Edge CTS however I hear a weird rattling/grinding/scraping noise. It almost sounds like a small motor has kicked on that rarely gets used. I tend to hear it after finishing a medium or long uphill where I've been running at 2500+ RPM and then finish the hill and let off a bit and back down to 1500 RPM. At the point I let off some, but not completely is when I hear the noise.

Here is a link to a video I took to try and help: .

It's an iPhone video so the audio isn't great. The first part of the video features the weird noise, then it goes away in the second part of hitting the gas again and stays gone until the end when I let off the gas completely.

Ideas?

You do not think it is your engine fan?

That would make sense, I really have no idea. Are you thinking the fan sounds normal, or it sounds bad which is why I noticed it?

I'm not picking up the sound very well off your video. The fan makes a huge noise when it cycles on and off but that's normal. Sounds like you're describing a compressor kicking on/off.
A few of the mystery sounds I've heard in the past have been the normal transfer case rattling (Atlas II), the dog house not put on correctly which made a swishing noise at speed, and a blown turbo hose.

I agree with Daveb on all the noise sources. But what I think I am hearing is your engine fan when your engine is at about 215 degrees and your off the throttle cresting the hills. The engine has not cooled off enough to fully disengage the fan and your engine noise is much lower but when throttle applied the fan kicks in a bit.

Is it possible that the fan isn't fully engaging? The fan roars on my 6.0 when it kicks in and is normally quite loud especially if the window is down.

Thanks for all the replies. I'll be taking it in to get some bullet proofing done and I'll have them check the fan while they're at it.

Can you monitor ECTs (Engine Coolant Temps) with your Edge CTS? If it is the engine fan kicking in, you should be able to see the ECTs drop as it kicks in.

I have to agree though, it is hard to discriminate much in terms of specific sounds.

Isn't the extra fan noise the turbo cooling fan?? Usually kicks in when you have been maxing the turbo and then let off. It's a loud fan for sure. If you aren't hearing a discernible loud fan noise then maybe you need to get that checked.

I know when I am doing a climb in my F250 and then let off I get the fan kicking in. There is no missing it, it's loud.

The ECT doesn't seem to drop a ton that I've noticed.

Could be the turbo fan, that makes sense. I must say it doesn't very "fan-like" though.
