Re: Oil Leak?

Well, it is the steering box that has a slow leak. Unfortunately it is going to cost between $500 - $600 to fix it, almost all of that is in labor. It is such a slow leak I'm going to ignore it for the moment. However, on the way back from SMB Fresno on Monday evening, my emissions control light came on. I have two error codes now:

P0299 - Turbo or solenoid issue
P0611 - Fuel injection control

I'm bringing the van into Ford on Monday for the warranty work. Depending on what needs to be done, I may have them fix the steering box leak at the same time if they already have it exposed.

Re: Oil Leak?

I don't know about your dealership, but mine tried to charge me the same individual price to replace the fuel filter when they were already into that area doing something else I told them to forget it and said if you're gonna charge me a flat rate for each job, I'll just have my mechanic replace the filter. They called me back with a new lower price to replace the filter...go figure.

Good luck.

Re: Oil Leak?

Do you know where the leak is from?

Gasket?

Cross-shaft bolt?

Porous Casting?

Shaft seal?

Some of those could be repaired fairly cheaply with the box in place. But, you need to know exactly what is leaking.

Or, wrap a daiper around the box and let it leak. Replace missing fluid and change the daiper once in awhile.

Had the P0611 code once, dealer fixed it, and hasn't been a problem since. Hopefully its just as easy a fix for you.

Oil Leak?

How about trying some "power steering stop leak" before spending 500 bucks. Unless of course its a fitting or hose or something like that.

Re: Oil Leak?

I'm not exactly sure where the exactly leak is from although it is the steering box itself and not the return hose. The mechanic was going to use a reseal kit to fix the problem. The kit itself is about $130, it is just the labor that makes it so expensive. I can definitely live with it for a while since it is such a slow leak right now. What is "power steering stop leak"? Any potential downsides to trying this out?

Herb, thanks for linking me to your post and the TSB. Also great to hear you haven't had problems since then. I'll update this post once I know more on my end.

Re: Oil Leak?

A 'reseal kit' to me implies the shaft seals, either in or output. In which case a power steering stop leak might do the trick.

The cost alone makes it worth trying.

Oil Leak?

On my various motorcycles, I always used Bel Ray Fork Oil with "Seal Swell" and never lost a fork seal. Maybe it's the oil I used maybe it was my maintenance habits, it certainly wasn't a lack of riding. I think sometimes those stop leak products actually do what they say.

I'm curious about your turbo code - all 4 times I've got that it led to turbo replacement or cleaning the vanes? How many miles do you have on it? Lucky you are still on warranty, I no longer am.

Re: Oil Leak?

PatO, this is the first time it has happened to me...and hopefully the last. Our van is a 2007 that we picked up in October of that year. It had 40k miles when the problem occured. Let me know if there is anything else I can tell you. Sorry to hear you have had to deal with it 4 times.
