One more 6.0 getting proofed

Yup, bit the bullet. Going to be doing lots of exploring retirement a month away. Pulling the motor, studs, injectors, going thru the heads, hi amp alternator, 6.4 starter and tranny pan, it’s at Buds diesel in Orange County, Ca. 3 pages of parts. Hard to believe they say it will be ready to roll on Friday.

Mine had the exact same treatment. Runs like a scalded dog. Buds did the work as well.

SMB only had 56k miles. I bought it just before the owner was going to loose it back to the bank. Maintenance was the big question for me with the owner not providing much info or any paperwork. This forum has been awesome trying to figure out the ins and outs of owning a SMB.

Mike

Did find out that the Amsoil filter system was installed incorrectly.

Are they going to pull the heads off and put new head gaskets on when they do the ARP headstuds? For sure have those heads checked for cracks and if it were me I would spring for the Kill Devil o-ringed heads. Also, go with the 6.4 push rods.

How exciting!

We sure love our rigs after having done the same stuff to them. Depending on your regulations, we did the delete's and did 4" from the turbo back with Cat removed. Hood vents as well. All was done as preventative measures. They sure run great after all that.

Super excited for ya. She should last a very long time now.

How did you get 4" pipe around the dog haus? It's a tight squeeze and there's nothing aftermarket that I could find. I also killed the kitty. Bet that setup sounds awesome!

Hood vents are almost a requisite mod on our rigs.

Joe why o-ring heads......got 1000hp?
Except for my first 6l...on my 6th now....installed studs with the stock head gaskets. Deleted every one and sold them except #6 with over 250k. They towed 24k daily. #6 only has 195k on it.
#5 had twin turbos...200/100 injectors. Dyno tuned over 650hp/950ftlbs
Sold #5 to a buddy who still drives it daily...350k on it now

No, not at all. But yeah if you want to make big HP then for sure. But really it's about making sure the heads and block are flat and the studs torqued correctly. But, it's not necessarily about making big HP. O-ringing the heads increases the clamping force on the head gasket. Is it necessary? No, but it's such a PIA on a van that I would do it despite the extra expense (~$500) and peace of mind. But for sure pressure test the heads to ensure there are no cracks, both in the valve seats and the fuel gallery. Then absolutely make sure you've got a good machine shop that will surface them flat and micro-polished for the best seal with the HG as well.

Google it. You'll find lots of cases of guys blowing head gaskets again after a ARP head gasket job. It's probably fine on a van for sure with the detuned HP but I doubt you will find one case from anyone that has blown their head gaskets after an o-ring job. And generally vans don't blow the head gaskets anyway. So yeah, it's probably overkill.

I want to know it's dependable and going to last as I'm grinding up an 11% grade at 100F in an 11,000lb van loaded for bear. But I should just keep my mouth shut because I do want to build a 500 HP motor

Good for you!
I had a lot of useful input from members here when I had my new engine installed; The take-away for me with the many suggestions I received was simply to take advantage of the fact a lot of stuff is now accessible.
Might consider having them replace both harnesses, upgrade to a BPD Water pump & aluminum radiator, and add an extra layer of the heat shield on the underside of the dog house (barely feel it getting warm on the inside of my Van now). I also had many of the hoses replaced.

Granted it's all an additional cost, but since the FE is out, you're not having to incur the expense of "access" again.
I'm sure all will go well with your upgrades.
