Re: Out with the Old and In with a Cummins

We're using the 47RH Dodge transmission with a 241 t-case. I had the tranny rebuilt & upgraded and we installed a SYE kit on the t case.

Just yanked the engine back out so we can swap the exhaust manifold & motor mounts. Also have some more parts coming from one of the Cummins swap specialists.

I think its marginal.. You wont find a D60 behind any CTD in a factory application. In fact if I remember correctly, the dodge trucks switched a bigger D80 axle if the CTD was a manual, vs auto. I also found another pinion gear in a box in the van which tells me this isn't the first time my D60 has needed work.

Just something to consider.

The offset, or lack of with my motor placement, might also have something to do with pinion bearing failure. But I wont know which parts are failing until friday when my D60 gets new pumpkin bearings/shimmed etc. Its a temporary fix..

Darn.. I was hoping you were going to use a manual so I could see what it took before I started converting mine.. I hope that 47RH has some serious mods because the CTD is so brutally torquey.

I don't see why that would affect pinion bearing- there shouldn't be pressure on the pinion after 2+ U-joints in the driveline. Torque and/or a bad setup- if you don't know who set up your new gears they might have done it wrong.

Also the pinion in the box, was it new? Because if they slapped in a ring gear, having chipped one or something, but left the existing pinion in the pinion might have been weakened by the previous failure.

Beyond that, ring and pinions are a matched set and should not be swapped around.

Re: Out with the Old and In with a Cummins

Swapping out the Ford diesel for a Cummins seems like an excellent idea. I never thought of it for other than a pickup truck.

Here's a resource that might be worth checking out:

Re: Out with the Old and In with a Cummins

just heard that Chris is back on the task. I guess had to custom build some motor mounts for it.

Re: Out with the Old and In with a Cummins

Sorry to say that this project has been cancelled. Our schedules for completion/pick up/etc aren't close enough so we decided to stop now and liquify everything we can. Lot of good parts coming up for sale!
