I asked what the ballpark cost would be for the E-Kit installed. He said $1800-$2200 for parts. $4000-$5000 total for them to install. However, he made it clear that that is just a guess at this point.

My perspective is this: I monitor both coolant temp and engine oil temp. I am aware that they are supposed to stay close during normal driving conditions. I also have my Edge monitor set up to flash if any of my temps get even close to too hot and know to back off if my life doesn't depend on it. So, I feel confident that I will recognize when it is time to address this issue.

So, although I think there would be a benefit to having the oil temps stay a little lower, as an overall strategy to keep the engine running indefinitely in a world of limited resources - I will likely wait until I see a symptom of the problem surface. All the while, squirreling away the money for a fix that is likely inevitable over the long-term.

Sounds like they will have to pull the engine. Are you considering head studs? Would be a good time, and then maybe you could tune the engine for more torque and better mpg's.

There is no substitute for cubic dollars.

Only $4000-$5000.

I would tend to agree with Zeta, if you're going to pull the engine do everything right the first time or just wait as you're suggesting. Will that shop honor a Ford warrantee? If that was the case, I'd be hopeing for a bed plate leak
I'm using an additive for the fuel nowdays...that makes a difference from what some of the mechanics I've talked report. Hope they're right, because after my EGR and injector failed, I started using what Ford recogmends. I also try to test my oil on a regular basis. Blackstone labs knew I had a failing injector long before it failed on my engine, unfortunately Ford would not recognize the lab test so I had to let it fail. I just got lucky that the EGR and injector were taken care of at the same time.
I sure would like to get more HP out of my engine but I'm not having any trouble pulling around an 11,000 van and a trailer behind it. Until I get some reliable data on tuning, I'll hold off. The low torque kicks butt for slow crawling off roading plus I like the overall fuel savings. I just hope diesel prices stay cheaper than gas

Everyone, thanks for all the links etc. It has been very informative. I have coolant leaking onto the top of my engine. I highly suspect it is coming from the EGR cooler. I've not been able to confirm that yet however due to lack of visibility. I will pull the EGR valve to inspect for water there.
I think adding oil & coolant temp gauges will be a very smart thing. What brand or type of monitoring systems have you all used?

Diesel is for those guys who wanted to grow up and drive trucks or bulldozers but had the good sense to become Bankers or Engineers or something else worthwhile. They can now go back to that sandbox.
