Re: Rear axle ID

For what it's worth, here's the Amsoil products I put in my 2005 Ford LSD rear diff.

SVTQT-EA: SEVERE GEAR 75W-110 Synthetic EP Lubricant
ADATB-EA: Slip Lock Gear Oil Additive

That was about 10k miles ago and it seems happy with it so far.

Any ideas on how to decode the rear axle tag and figure out my rear axle and the corresponding lubricant? This is for an '06 E-350 van.

Check this site out for help.

Mine has the same number. But it does not have the L-S or the other numbers you posted and I know for a fact it has L-S installed. I found mine on my axle but it has been painted and is barely visible.

Re: Rear axle ID

Looked at the sites referenced, thanks. There's some good info there.

Still confused as to whether its a Dana 60 (assume that's what the M60 refers to) or Dana 70 (assume that's what the M70 refers to) though.

Re: Rear axle ID

Just use the 75w140 no matter which diff. Ford spec'd it for the D70 LS because that gets the hottest. It is better than 90w in every way.

BTW - if you read the fine print in the owner's manual, you have to increase diff oil changes to every 5000 miles if you do not use synthetic. Otherwise, Ford says it's lifetime, or every 150,000 for severe use. (that's what my manual says anyways). I change mine every 50,000 though because the LS additive wears out, then the clutches wear and leave a metallic sludge on my ABS sensor which screws the ABS up.

Re: Rear axle ID

My owner's manual mentioned the same thing about Lifetime if it comes with synthetic, and 50,000 miles otherwise. Not that I believe "Lifetime" anything, but if the owner's manual, or window sticker, or door jamb sticker doesn't tell you what axle you have or what lubricant is used, what's the value in providing two very different service intervals in an owner's manual?

Looks like I'll be using the Amsoil 75W-140 Severe Gear (SVOQT) with two four ounce bottles of the Slip Lock Differential Additive (ADATB).

Re: Rear axle ID

Well, you're right Herb, 1/4 - 9/16 below the filler plug. News to me, all the Fords I've had were to the bottom of the plug. Sorry about the bum info.
Anyway, this should give you an idea of what rear end you have.

Good luck.

Re: Rear axle ID

Thanks for the picture Scatter! I'll have to go out in daylight and look for the differences. BTW, where did you find the pictorial?

Re: Rear axle ID

Herb - that's a copy of a page out of the Ford service manual.

Re: Rear axle ID

The Dana axles are also stamped on the surface next to the diff cover.
