rear emissions canisters

I have a Ford 98 v8 gas and there are two emission (I think that is what they are) canisters connected to the frame at the rear. They were removed when SMB installed the underfloor storage and since then I keep getting the check engine light come on for a lean mixture (per the codes). Has anybody removed these? Should they be removed? what should happen to the tubes when they are removed? Could this be what is causing my lean mixture codes?

Thanks

Re: rear emissions canisters

Are you sure they weren't just moved and not removed.

Re: rear emissions canisters

They may have been charcoal evaporation canisters, which "I think" are there to capture fuel vapors that would otherwise evaporate from the fuel tank.

If that's what they were, and if removed, perhaps the vent hoses weren't properly terminated. Pure conjecture though.

Re: rear emissions canisters

Herb. Thanks, you might be right. I was going to snap a picture of them but when you suggested evap I found a picture on the web (woudlnt it be cool if you could put a picture into google and it returns a word - OK just joking) and it looks like that is what it is. Should these lines be blanked off? One has an electrical plug connection so I assume it has some input to a sensor somewhere!

Re: rear emissions canisters

Yeah you can't get more removed than that. I'm surprised they took them all the way out since they are part of the emission control system. We don't have emission testing here but I know other states do.

I moved my canister in preparation for the undervan storage.

On the top of the canister is a electrically operated purge valve that, when open, takes the fumes from the canister and directs them to the air intake.

That line should definitely be blanked off.

Emissions testing may vary from state to state, but removing emissions equipment violates federal law. Hardly means it never done, especially where testing is lax or non-existent, but I'm surprised SMB would do that.

Re: rear emissions canisters

Removing those is definitely a big no-no. I'm surprised SMB would do that. You will continue to get codes until the system is intact.

BTW - one more thing to check.... Sometimes a lean code can be caused by a dirty MAF sensor. I use CRC MAF cleaner on mine periodically.

You should check out TinEye.com. While you can't match your OWN photo except to other instances of it, returning the google image search terms isn't that much more of a stretch.

How long until you can put a cell phone pic into Google and get a persons name? The technology is there.
