Rebuild 7.3L or Cummins Swap.

My van is creeping up on 400k miles. I want it to last a while, so I was thinking about putting new injectors in and a new HPOP.

If I put in new injectors, I would install new injector cups. And I'm pretty sure I would have to pull the engine to do that.

And if I pull the engine, I might as well rebuild it. ANNNNDDD if I rebuild it, I would add a few ponies to it.

I added up all the prices for that, and it seems like a 24v Cummins swap would be about the same (or cheaper) to do the conversion. Plus, a Cummins isn't as loud as the 7.3.

Other than the bell housing and flex plate and transmission controller, I would have to do everything else myself (which I don't mind). No conversion company makes anything for the vans.

I have a few friends I helped with a Fummins swap and it's very straightforward.

What do you guys think?

Injector cups

I’m just doing a 460 to 7.3l swap, and went through the same debate.
An alternative would be to contact Bitterroot Diesel in Montana. They make an amazing injector cup puller that works like a charm on the econoline. Allows you to leave your engine in and do injector cups. Just did them on another van and it works perfectly.
They rent the tool. It’s easy… and saves going down the rabbit hole too far.
Just a simple solution. Obviously a motor swap will scratch other itches that sometimes need scratching.

Yup I don’t have to pull the motor to change cups
After you rebuild the Cummins and buy everything needed to do the swap you’ll be around 10k over a 7.3 rebuild

The idea of a Cummins/Allison swap is the one thing that makes me want to keep my E350. Granted, the engine in my van is a 7.3 IDI with 200K miles on it, so the CTD option is a little more cost-beneficial than if the van had a PSD.

It seems the swap really wants you to be able to remove the body from the chassis, which is something I don't have the space to do. Plus, converting to an '08+ front end makes the swap much easier. The earlier clip can be made to work, but it seems like it adds no small amount of complexity to the intercooler fitment that can be avoided by the clip conversion.

Unfortunately, as much as I want a "Fummins" I want space more, so a Transit 350 is probably in my not-too-distant future.

@225 - There is a guy on here that has a yellow E-350 with a cummins swap done. MG did one too to a 6.7. He is legendary check it out: https://www.sportsmobileforum.com/fo...ect-10952.html

I cant find the thread on the yellow van but if you search you can find it. It is a sick van! Do the swap!!

Sorry for the late reply. I work on a boat, and my service is spotty.

I've seen a few swaps like MG's swap. I have a 08+ front end conversion and I will be adding a intercooler either way.

I didn't know if I could do the cups with the engine still in the van.

I've been watching prices on 7.3 parts, and they have actually been dropping. And if I keep the 7.3, I'll do a rebuild and be shooting for 500-550hp. Why? Because it would be cool lol.

The same HP is easy to get on a Cummins too.

I dunno. Thanks for the info guys.

Really? Since 2013, I've seen zero Cummins swapped Eseries vans in person other than my own, pictures of only 2 other modern common rail swaps and less than half-dozen 12V swaps in vans overall. There are not that many vans out there with Cummins swaps that I've seen in 8 years but if you've seen a few like mine (2013+ 6.7L common rail with Allison 6-speed), I'd love to share notes and swap stories with the owners! b. rock and I have shared lots of info between each other (He's got a 2013 engine with 2011 controls) but if there are more of us out there, all the better!

I have a friend who has two 24v / Allison 6 speed vans, not a newer CR. He got the kit from destroked.com. He also has a 6.7 / Allison in a f-450.

He has some way of getting 0 mile Cummins engines from somewhere. I didn't ask too many questions about that lol.

I've talked to them about a new 6.7 engine and they said that I would have to do everything as a stand alone system.
