Regearing Question: From 4.10 to 4:56, 4.88 or 5.13 on Econoline Van

Regearing Question: Has anyone ever regeared from 4.10 to 4.88? How's it run? I have a 1994 Ford E350 Econoline on 33" KO2's. Want to regear to 4.88 or 5.13. I mainly use the van for off-road driving in remote areas of South America. It never sees more than 50mph. Some people have been saying that 5.13 is even better? Some people say that having too 5.13 is too many teeth on the gear for a van of that weight. They say that the weight and power of the van would break the gear.

Because of your low speeds, 4.56 or 4.88 would be a good match, in my opinion. 5.13 might be a bit much IMO. I don't think you'll have problems with it breaking, since you don't have low range (not 4x4?) .The ring teeth are smaller than 4.88 but the teeth that break are usually the pinion teeth, and it looks like 5.13 gears do have thick-cut pinion teeth. But your transmission is kinda dumb, and it might spend more time shifting between 1 & 2 than actually using 1st gear. You'd probably have to re-spring the valve body, so that it'll shift quicker. Might not be a bad idea with any ratio above than 4.10.

I went from 3.73 TO 4.56 on my 7.3. It made a huge difference. I needed freeway speeds to 4.30 would have been a better match. I just regeared a 4runner from 4.10 to 4.88 and it eliminated downshifts for most of the time.

4:56 on my v-10 RB with 35" tires on it seems perfect. Smooth and true up to 80, started to get a little shimmy above that, it is subtle, but I never push it faster. Not sure what is causing that, may not have anything to do with the diff.

Mine is just the opposite. At most highway speeds (60 - 75 mph) no shimmy but I can feel a tiny bit of vibration. 80+ mph and it is smooth as glass...hit 91 mph on I-15 in Utah one time (according to the GPS) when passing a line of trucks and I was amazed at how smooth it was at that speed. But I have the Centramatic style wheels balancers on each wheel so maybe they work better at higher speeds.
