Sct flash Sf3 tuner error 1009 now X3 with Mike 5-Star

I have a 2002 7.3 smb quigley 4x4.

Just bought a new Sct tuner and trying to upload the preloaded tunes.

First thing I did was hook it up to my PC, installed the software and Clicked Automatic Updates

It now has the latest update.

Now, plugged tuner into my van and under select vehicle on the menu it only shows 6.0. I checked Device info and it shows "5 unlocks left", under Tune "6.0L Super Duty". No where does it state locked or unlocked, married or unmarried.

I proceed to tune anyway. I select 6.0, as its the only option and after the Unlock ECu step I get error 1009 no tune changes written. I followed the prompts accordingly too (ie turn key to on or off).

Hoping someone has some ideas before being placed on hold on the phone with SCT for 4 hrs tomorrow.

TIA

Don't you have to buy custom tunes for that model? I got mine from 5-star tuning.

That's correct but the preloads were not written for vans so you might need a custom tune anyway.

You are correct. Shame on me for not doing due diligence.

Also, after talking with SCT tech support I find out its married to a 2004 F-series 6.0. Seller on eBay told me it was brand new, never opened.

Its about to get interesting.

FYI his/her eBay ID: mominok

Just got off the phone with Mike at 5-star.

good dude.

I'm buying his X3 package that comes loaded with 3 of his tunes.

Was going to pick:
60hp tow tune
80hp street daily
40hp heavy tow tune

FYI - if you're trying to locate the PCM its behind the gas pedal, top right, 3 letters followed by 1 number.

I thought it was in the engine bay and even pulled the PCM wiring harness off, then realized nothing was there and looked under the dash, behind the gas pedal. Viola.

When I went this route I did a lot of research (given that that the vans have a challenge in getting rid of heat). I wasn't interested in major engine changes or HP gains like some of the truck yahoos and was interested in an economy tune with improved shift points and lockup for the automatic transmission. I've got a 6.0 but apparently the higher power programs will always yield the best mileage, if driven with a light foot. The van programs also have slightly less aggressive fueling tables than the truck programming. I chose an economy tune from Innovative Diesel which is about 60rwhp over stock with both PCM and TCM tuning. I'm getting an extra 1 to 2 mpg and the extra HP is nice to have when you need it. Hope that helps. Joe
