I've opened up my donor year search due to carringb's suggestions. However, using car-part for more arm chair mechanicing, I notice the following:

99-04 full floats are all listed as 9.75 ring gear
05-08 full floats are listed as 10.5 ring gear

Wikipedia tells me that the D60 has a 9.75 ring gear and D70 has a 10.5 ring gear.

Does that mean that:

99-04 Econoline full float is a D60
05-08 Econoline full float is a D70

Thanks for the continued education!

The cutaways got the 10.5" ring gear. It is correct for those for sure. I'm not sure what ring and pinion came in the RSC full float van axles.

Beware that many ambulances built from vans seem to come up as 10.5 FFs even though the pics clearly show a 9.75" semi-float.

Also my '00 wagon came with a D70 housing but 9.75" gears were stuffed in it. Carrier/ring/pinion swap was straightforward to turn it into a 10.5".

The SF is a basic longevity failure that was designed for budget reasons. I want all four wheels attached to the axle's at all times, nough said.

My 04 CC D70 from an ambulance is a 10.5 FF

Do I gather all Ford rear axles would be some sort of Dana assembly? Did Ford ever use alternative vendors for those?

I became curious if my existing axle was the 3-channel ABS type CarringB mentions and it was, photos of the center differential speed sensor:

Photos of the right side rear caliper (I assumed the lack of visible wheel speed sensors confirms I do NOT have the 4 channel ABS):

It was raining and even though I was temporarily parked over a dry floor the weather wasn't all that friendly for more crawling around under my wet van. This following photo is the only easily read number I could find---will have to search for others more out of curiosity than any real need. Since I'll be replacing this axle apart from the rear ratio I don't need to know what I currently have.

As for the donor axle most likely I'll have to visit the seller's yard and see what they'd provide to get more definitive info. I have two photos they sent but they're not the most helpful, at least to me:

I believe I see evidence these offerings would be compatible with my 3-channel ABS, also seem to show axle ratio of 3:73. I've requested images of the top of the center case to further confirm what I think I already see.

Worst case scenario I'll have $150 in an unusable hunk of steel and iron that could be re-sold locally for that same amount. At this point I'll buy one of these shown and "hope" for the best.

The parts catalogs list a Ford/Sterling axle as being installed as well, but I've never seen one. Maybe they were limited runs, for a fleet customer like UPS package cars or something (that's why manual transmissions were still listed for our vans through '03 or so, even though none were sold retail).

The only exceptions I'm aware of are the first runs of '97 E350 wagons, which got the 7-lug Sterling semi-float, shared with the light-duty F250 (which was just an uprated F150), which is why the wheel covers for all E350s ended up with 7-lugs!

BTW - Based on the brake-line splitter-block hanging off that axle, I think you have a good match. The 4-channel ABS axles would have 2 rubber hoses coming to it, and an elbow going to each side. The other hose hanging off there looks like the vent hose, not a 2nd brake hose.

Thanks again CarringB---yeah the price is right on the two axles these guys have so they'll follow me home in a week or so. I'm making a WAG this outfit doesn't sell many van rear axles which might be the reason they offered me my choice for so cheap.

A few additional questions:

1. Will my Ford dog dish wheel covers fit over the FF hub?

2. Should I have the wheel studs replaced or just cleaned up--they look fairly
rusty.

3. Are there any other checks or tests I should make before installing this
axle? I'm already planning to replace the outer most bearings
preemptively and thoroughly inspecting the existing axle shafts. Anything
even border line replaceable will be---don't want any surprises too soon
after installation.

4. I'll descale and use POR-15---would a wire wheel work well enough or
should I have the whole thing sandblasted?

And lastly what gear oil should I use?

TIA!

1) They definitely put the dog dishes on vans with FF's, but I don't know if they made them in different depths.

2) I'd try wire brushing them followed by Scotchbrite. Maybe chase them if they're really bad. As long as you can torque the lugnuts to 140 ft-lbs, you should be good.

3) I'd consider doing the pinion seal with those miles. When that seal dries out, water can enter there and allow the pinion bearings to corrode.

4) I'd just hit it quick with a wire brush. No need to fully detail it IMO.

Definitely run full synthetic. I recommend 75w-140. The Motorcraft stuff is good but I use Mobile 1 just because that's what Napa carries and is often on sale.
