Re: simple engine explanation please...??

I have a theory that the V10 has a constant gallons-per-hour consumption regardless of speed, load etc..

Unless written "tongue in cheek", not true. Our 4x4 V10 gets about 4-5 mpg in 1st gear, 6-7 mpg in 2nd gear, and maybe 10-11 mpg in 3rd gear. On the freeway (flat, no grades, 60-65 mph), it gets about 13-14 mpg. It helps to have a very light touch on the accelerator.

Dave, I suspect that is because you were running in a higher gear than the V-10 except on level stretches of the trail. When we were on a trip to Mexico led by Monica and Gary Wescott with several other SMBs, we drove down into the Copper Canyon a couple of times. The road was steep (and narrow). I was in 4WD, low range, first gear in our V10 while the diesel owners were in 4WD, low range, second gear. They were probably in a higher gear going back out too...
