Smell of gas

To the chase, we’re in Mexico on our way into copper canyon, ‘09 5.8, Quigley. Climb almost 4000 ft in less than 10 miles on dirt track, steep and warm out out. Get to the top, jump out to take in the view and get a very strong smell of gas on the exterior of the van, primarily from the rear. No codes, no visible leaks anywhere, runs great. Keep going or turn back? In an over abundance of caution turn back the 25 miles, get to a mechanic and nothing, no smell, no code, nada. I’m thinking sensors, charcoal filter, fuel pump, gaskets but get no clear indicators. Any thoughts?

Fuel tank vents are probably failing. I wouldn't worry too much about it if I were on a trip but I would get them replaced sooner or later.

I'm sure you just shook things up on the steep dirt road climb.

Safe travels!

If your climb was steep enough your engine wasn’t making much vacuum, it won’t pull vacuum through the canister and it can vent from there. Steep up hills and a full tank can also saturate it from gravity, even causing it to vent a small amount of liquid gas.

Once again, you guys deliver. Suspected it was something along those lines but don’t have enough background for the confidence vote. Can’t thank you enough and very much appreciate your prompt reply, we’re off again en La mañana.
