I had a 1976 duster years ago that sounded exactly like that when the alternator failed. It was a catastrophic failure over the course of a few minutes though. I pulled off the highway and had shrapnel spraying the underside of the hood that was so loud people were running away from my car. The bearings completely let go.

It could absolutely have caused the sound. I had my alternator rebuilt when it went out and the front bearing was faulty, despite having just been replaced. I couldn't believe how noticeable the sound was, and if it hadn't been for the fact that the noises started immediately after changing the alternator (and thereby almost surely removing any other source of the noise as an option) I may have been chasing that sound for quite a while.

I have been far from home when alternator bearing noise began. Fortunately, I had a spare but the first one was still charging fine.
