steering wheel not straight...

Hello,
My steering wheel is about 30 degrees to the right if I want to drive straight... Is there an easy fix to just put it back inline? I saw a screw on the linkage/joint just before the pump (i think) and tried to mess with it, loosen it, turn the wheel and tighten it again but it didn't make much improvement. I didn't want to pull to hard on the wheel...should I? Is it the right thing to do?
Thank you

I don't know much about the steering setup in your van but I would not drive that until you find out what happened. That sounds pretty bad.

That should be fixed when you have the front alignment done. The vans are tricky, and you can't easily adjust the wheel position.

Re: steering wheel not straight...

I'll look into it one more time but I will take the van to Hubert once I am done changing some front suspension parts. I'll take a picture of that bolt I am talking about. It really looks like what needs to be adjusted...
thanks

Re: steering wheel not straight...

Easy adjustment. But first, try and find out why it's not straight. If it was adjusted that way, no problem, just adjust it to where you want. If it got that far out due to something bent, get it checked if you don't know what to look for. I adjusted mine about 30 degrees off cause it fits my hand better when my elbow is on the window sill.
To adjust, center up the front wheels so you are driving in a straight line. Then crawl under the rig and look for the track rod that goes from the pitman arm (that's the arm connected to the steering box) to the passenger side wheel. There are two clamps on it and you just loosen them and rotate the section of rod that's between the two clamps. Sometimes it's a little stiff and a pipe wrench or plyers will help. As you turn the rod, you will notice that the steering wheel will rotate. Just keep turning the rod till the steering wheel is where you want it. If the steering wheel rotates the wrong direction, turn the rod the other way. When the wheel is where you want it, tighten the two clamps. There are slits in the clamps so you can see the ends of the rod. They're there so you can see the rod ends so you don't adjust it out too far and don't have enough threads left to safetly hold the rod. This will not affect your alignment in any way. Piece of pie adjustment.

Thanks Scatter,
Makes sense. I should have thought about it. And it sounds like a easy tweak...
Thank you!

Re: steering wheel not straight...

That only works on 4wd vans. It's not clear that he has 4wd or 2wd.
