Timing belt

Hi. I think I read somewhere on this forum there is a Ford website I can check to see if my van had work done on it at a dealership. I would like to see if the timing belt has been changed (my odometer say 102xxx miles. The van was bought this year). Thanks.

Re: Timing belt

The major service required at 100,000 miles is changing spark plugs on the gas motors.

Re: Timing belt

What year is it and which V8 does it have?

Timing belts are pretty much related to overhead cam engines of more modern design and smaller displacement.

V8's have a timing chain which is located behind the water pump. While timing chains can stretch over time and very rarely will break, they will normally last hundreds of thousands of miles with no service. These older V8's are NOT an interference engines (meaning that the pistons and valves DO NOT occupy the same space at different times) so there is little risk of engine damage should a chain break.

If it is a newer overhead cam Triton motor it will have chains as well but the design is different. I believe there are chain tensioners on that motor and those can fail over time. The 5.4 Triton is NOT an interference engine so there is little risk of engine damage as well.

Re: Timing belt

In 2005 Ford issued a bulletin for the timing chain on my '03. Ford replaced the timing chain at no cost. Any Ford garage can pull up the repair history for you.
