Re: Trans temp?

TorqShift 5 speed was available on mid-2003 model year F-Series Super Duty pickups and Excursions equipped with a 6.0L PSD and in 2004 they added the E350 Super Duty vans with the PSD or the 6.8L V10. I think carringb has a 4R100 in his dually van. I don’t know what trans. 86Scotty has.

Trans temp?

I haven't read the above links yet, but I've got an 02 5.4 with the 4r100 trans if I remember right. I looked it up awhile back. I'm pleased to report that several thousand miles later on this same trip, I haven't gone above 195. I've been all over Cali, Utah and Nevada and climbed some super grades including Vail and Loveland pass coming in to Denver today. It's been pretty hot too except for today in Colorado. Death Valley in the summer, for obvious reasons, is a harsh test of your rigs capabilities. I'm still going to add a cooler and I'm due for a fluid change, which will be done ASAP.
I have one question though, where does the Scanguage measure from? How accurate do you guys think it is, since it's obviously pulling this info from the ECM somehow. The van doesn't have
a factory measurement in the pan does it, or we would know and take advantage of it?

Re: Trans temp?

It's plugged into the OBDII port.

Re: Trans temp?

Yup. I have the 4R100.

I believe the stock temp sender, which the PCM reads (and then sends to your scangauge or whatever) is in the valve body.

I have a Banks trans temp gauge, and it reads from the test port, which is where Banks recommended it be installed.

Re: Trans temp?

Thanks. I knew it couldn't be the test port that scanguage uses, since it isn't wired there. I had no idea where obdII might read it, the mysteries of a modern ecu are beyond me.
Also, I confirmed that I do have the 4R100. I didn't know any V10s had it though. If they do, that makes me feel better about it's strength and durability.
I forgot to mention that after my two high temp episodes, my fluid is still good and red and smells fresh, no burn smell. That helps my confidence for sure.

Re: Trans temp?

All the V10's from '00 to '04 got the 4R100. The '97-'99 vans got the predecessor, the E4OD. Essentially the same basic architecture, but the 4R100 got some updates to make it stronger to be able to cope with the higher horsepower Powerstroke that came out in the '99 F-series. Most trans shops (and Ford remans) rebuilt the E4OD to 4R100 spec when they some in.

Starting in '05 the V10 got the 5R110 TorqueShift.

Trans temp?

Carringb, would you lean strongly towards the Torqueshift if looking for a V10 van? Is it worth shopping for the newer model van? Just curious of your opinion. Thx

I do wish I had the TorqueShift. I haven't had any problems with my 4r100, but the Torqueshift is all around a better package IMO. The grade braking feature is really nice, especially with the V10 and it's excellent engine braking. It's stronger also. But the biggest deficiency of the 4R100 is the huge gap between 1st and 2nd gear. And.... 1st gear is kinda tall. The TorqueShift adresses both of those issues by making 1st gear really low, and stuffing an extra gear in between (D and OD are the same ratio on both transmissions, with a minor exception explained below*).

There have been a handful of times I wish I had a lower 1st, and many times I with I had a gear between 1st and 2nd. If I'm loaded up over 24,000 pounds, and something slows me down on a 7% or steeper grade, I won't be able to get out of first because 2nd puts me back below peak torque. At least the V10 revs high enough 1st gear is still good for 40 MPH. I have considered adding a Gear Vendors to remedy the large gap between 1st and 2nd (and give me double OD) but those things are $$$.

*BTW - the TorqueShift is actually a 6-speed. It only uses 4th gear in some situations. What we normally feel is "DRIVE" is actually 5th. OD is 6th. That's why they still label it 1-2-3-D-OD and not 1-2-3-4-OD.
