4R100 stopped production in 2005, so any vans newer than that won't have it.

I am surprised to see some 03ish vans with it. Weird the mix of parts they used those years (ditto the full floats and semi float axle those same years). It's almost like somebody yelled "just grab what's out back!".

Since were on the subject of questionable shifting, my 2001 has started exhibiting a slight hesitation upon acceleration from a stop. That's to say the engine revs up, but forward motion is delayed by a half second or so. It's as if the fluid was low, but I don't believe it is, although it's a bit hard to tell since the dipstick comes up with one level on one side and another on the opposite side. Some googling suggests that the separator plate in the valve body may have a small crack or defect in it, or the spring or ball may be cracked. Replacement plates that claim to be far superior are available for as little as $30. Anybody ever have this problem?

sent Quigley and email.. They are saying that my 2011 5.4 has an 5R100.

Are there any suggested upgrades to transmission while rebuilding?

For anyone wondering which transmission they have, you can enter your VIN number in the decoder below.

Amen on that. My brother has a 2008 E150 - at least that's the badging on it and what is on the registration. But it is equipped with 8 bolt wheels and a super heavy duty suspension. He can put a thousand pounds in the back by the rear doors and the back of the van won't even droop 2".

I'll remind OP and others the absolute wisdom of the full fluid exchange or flush where every bit of ATF is replaced with new fresh ATF, this practice best done about every 50K miles. Here's a link I found extremely helpful:

Here's also my own first hand experience with this process:

Interesting. My 4R100 is a BTS rebuild, and the owner of that shop swears by just draining and replacing the fluid in the pan every 35,000 miles.

30,000 pan drain and fills worked fine for me, but at 170,000 I switched to the bucket method. I figured since I was changing 3x the fluid it'd be good for 3x the distance. I've been doing 100,000 bucket services ever since (and 170k was the last time the pan was even off) and I'm getting close to 460,000 miles now. Transmission still shifts like new and fluid never smells burnt.

You get a nice watered down (~30%) clean up of the fluid...Certainly better than no change......Flush gets almost all the fluid replaced...Kind of depends on motivation, and the flush is less messy IMHO. Look up Mark Kovalski in ford-trucks.com or follow JWAs links...

Cheers

Yet, depending on who you talk to, BTS is the #1 or #2 most trusted rebuilders of the 4R100. I'll take his word on it.
