and if you don't mind, I am curious as to what a stock Ford replacement cost compared to the $5K for the other companies rebuild?

Argh. New Transmission arrived from Ford, shop pulled old one out. They're different.
Quigley doesn't swap transmissions.. but do they change anything? Left a VM for Sabrina at Quigley.
PO definitely didn't do anything with transmission.

Answers trickling in. Talked to Sabrina, and apparently they remove the tail housing and sometimes (depending on what they get from Ford, have to trim the end of the rear shaft off a couple inches). No big deal.
Problem is the transmission my shop received from Ford has an oval shaft, vs the normal round one that came out of my truck. So that's totally wrong, but the numbers match up. Trying to source another Ford unit.

Robb, post a picture.
If I remember right on yours it is a 2wd transmission with a 4wd tail piece and retains the 2wd longer output shaft and then has a spacer/adapter to make up for the longer output shaft. I could be wrong as I see so many, so post up a picture.
The other thing Quigley did at times was use the 4wd tail piece and 4wd output shaft and that did not require them to use the spacer/adapter. This is what we do for several reasons.

All sorted. Turns out Ford had mislabeled a transmission, so the first one the shop received was totally wrong (different shaft). They spent an hour on the phone with the Ford dealer, who found the correct one at another dealer, sent that over, and it was a direct swap.
Didn't even have to trim the output shaft like Sabrina said might be necessary (evidently they're not consistent).
Anyway, new transmission is in, I pick it up today and head to the mountains.

You are braver than I would be after just getting a new tranny: heading out on a road trip to the mountains! I'd drive it around town for a week or so just to make sure everything is sorted...
