Transmission Temperature - Page 2

Bill,

The thermocouple is a dedicated temperature probe inserted into the transmission. My '06 did not come with a factory Ford thermocouple, so at least for me, it has no bearing on whether or not any auxiliary fans are on or not. Mine was installed as part of my X-monitor setup.

Keep in mind that your '01 has a different transmission than later models. How much different, I have no clue.

Once again, Thank you all for your considered advice and information!
After reading about fluid smell and color, I rushed right out and checked mine. Nice and pink, with no abnormal smell. I talked to Amsoil Jim, and he recommended going to Amsoil tranny fluid/ combined with some of their Super Shift. Now, after reading your (yvrr) response, I'm thinking maybe Ford knows more than Amsoil re: Ford transmissions. (MAYBE)
I'm going to Moab for the Bill Burke thing and will continue to monitor the situation. If the tranny blows up, at least I'll be in good company! When (IF) I get home, I'm going to camp on Mr. Ford's doorstep until we find a solution. I'm going to list all the ideas and thoughts from you guys and see what the Ford tranny tech has to say.
Thank you for taking the time to help me with this. All the feedback is very informative and when Ford tells me that "Oh that's normal, they all do it." , I can say with complete assurance that they actually don't!

Skywagon, if your tranny blows up in Moab, we will drive you out, after doing the proper forensics on your SMB. Think of it as CSI - Moab.

FWY- my short lived experience with the Ford dealrship in Moab was less than stellar. I stopped in to see if they could read a code. The reply I got was that their "diesel guy" was not going to be in until next week. I got nothing but a dumb look from the guy behind the service counter.
On another note the ASAP shop south of town was more than helpful.

Does the Scan Gauge use the stock Ford sensor? If so it seems like the dealership should have plugged in and compared the trany temp of the scan gauge to a high dollar tester. The Scan Gauge could be off for one reason or another. I’d think the vehicle computer would throw a code or at least the check engine warning light should have come on if real damage was occurring. Wishful thinking anyway.

Could be wrong, but I believe the ScanGuage just reads and interprets the information that the Ford engine computer monitors. At leasat on mine, the ScanGuage had to be setup to show the tranny temp and it is more than possible to enter some incorrect parameters when configuring it to display tranny temp. For reference, just driving around town yesterday, my tranny temp was between 155 and 168 after it warmed up. The horsepower instananeous shot up to 300 when I put the pedal to the metal. Yahoo.

Scatter and I programmed my scan gauge, and i can't IMAGINE two geniuses like US would enter incorrect parameters

I checked all the stuff that looked like it might be a thermocouple leading to the trans, and everything looked like it ought to ; (To me at least. See paragraph above re: Geniuses!!)

So far, I am worried about Trans temps and I think I need more gauges.
