V10 performance questions

I am looking at a 2001 V10 and have a couple of questions.

How is fuel consumption, v10 vs Diesel

Engine longevity compared to a diesel?

How about maintance costs vs Diesel?

Overall rating compared to a diesel?

Thanks

V10 performance questions

Oldgoat,
If you are comparing the V10 to the current diesel offered by Ford you will find about 2 to 5 mpg less on the V10 on average depending on how you drive, if you tow etc.
I've been told the V10 has an excellent repair history and is a very durable motor good for 200K plus with proper maint. and use.
The diesels will cost more to maintain. More things to go wrong. Frequent expensive oil changes etc.
I don't know about the newer diesels but I've talked to owners of the older 7.3 that have in excess of 300k on them and are still strong.
All of my info is anecdotal. I haven't owned either motor, but have driven both. I've been researching your same questions for the past year as I move toward owning an SMB. I will buy a V10 for one reason.....noise. The diesels are loved by their owners for many reasons...all valid. I just can't handle the noise.

Thanks Christopher.

I will possibly be buying an older model if I can find what I'm looking for. The gas unit I'm looking at looks nice.

Are there child seat laws about sitting them sideways? This unit has facing benches in the rear.

Shop on...

My brother went through the whole side seated safety thing for his 4 and 2 year old and decided that side seating is acceptable in his Sprinter- I'm not sure what the pros and cons are, and the worst part is I still can't get him to sign up for this board!

I have a 2 & 4 year old. Side seating for children is either acceptable or not by the authorities. I'd be interested in hearing more about his reasearch.

Thanks, Dan

Child Restraints

Oldgoat,
Laws vary by State in the US. I don't know about Canada. I would get a copy of the BC vehicle code or go online or call your local office and find out. More importantly, I would be concerned about the actual safety of my kids sitting sideways versus forward or rear facing. I don't know the answer but logically it would seem that a car seat strapped to a sideways bench would not be very safe in a front or rear impact situation.
