V10 Reman Options

Well, it looks like the PO of our 2005 Pleasureway may have been dumping it for a reason. Saw an alarming amount of sparkly stuff in the oil during this most recent change. No idea if it was there before, did the last change in the cold/wind so I was moving very quickly. Filter has been opened up and the element is draining so I can check the pleats. I assume it's bearing material unless others have any other ideas?

Moving on, Jasper wants $8k for a reman V10. Accurate engines lists one at $3k with a 100k warranty. With lots of options in between.

Does anyone have any history with the options here?

Also, I thought the V10 was supposed to be pretty solid. Definitely not what I expected to see at 108k miles.

I'd go with Ford. Warranty work is covered at the dealer, and I believe it's 100k warranty.

I was a Jasper dealer for a few years, they make a decent product. They would be my second choice. They are an employee owned company that has been around since the 30's. Good people. I've toured some of their reman facilities, pretty impressive.

Our 2002 has a Triton v8 Jasper engine in it with about 60,000 miles on it. The engine has had no problems. Some of the bolt on ancillary stuff that was reused has had some issues. Be sure to check the warranty to see how many years it is good for. It might be 100,000 or five years which ever comes first.

Any motor can fail early if it’s not cared for. With the V10 especially, I’ saw early failures in motor homes because the owners were running 10w-40 (or heavier!) oil, because that’s what they heard big motors needed.

Anyways, I had to do mine at 460,000 because a plugged fuel filter made it lean out and burn a valve seat. I ended up doing a Ford reman, because it was only a little more than pulling the heads and having them reconditioned. It was less than the Jasper and shipping more complete (they sold it as a complete motor, not just a long-block).

FWIW - An 8k quote from Jasper sounds like somebody might have been quoting the 3-valve price.

I agree. I'm the former owner of Larrie's van above and I did that Jasper 5.4 reman not too long before I sold it. It was $5k, however this was somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 years ago.

Thanks for the feedback. Looks like prices may have just gone up, but I'm confirming w/ Jasper that was indeed for a 2v. Ford reman is a little bit cheaper at least.

This van came from folks that had 0 mechanical inclination but did at least appear to get it serviced somewhat regularly. I ran synthetic 5w-20 with the higher end fram XG2 filter (acknowledging that their lower end stuff is garbage, but that one is supposedly good).

The FIL suspects a timing guide failing so I might pull the timing cover to inspect, but it's a mix of ferrous and non ferrous metal (mostly yellow/non ferrous but some darker stuff does stick to the magnet) so it really seems like bearings to me.

Edit: image is current ford reman pricing

As an update, a local ford hot rod shop has a couple cores and can do a rebuild for $5500. That was for a base build, I didn't even ask about oversized valves, port/polish, etc.

Accurate engines confirmed $3k for the long block. They list off name brand parts, but that's suspiciously cheap. 100k warranty isn't very comforting when it throws a rod out in BFE and doesn't cover push/pull. Jasper called me to say that they're more in the $5k range, for some reason I got quoted for a motor home engine (even though the PW is built on the van chassis, not the cutaway).

Can you clarify this? I'm not aware of any differences at all in the motorhome V10 vs. the van one. Only differences I know of in V10's are 2v (all vans/MH's) and 3v (pick-ups and probably bigger vehicles).

I'd love to know if I'm wrong and what exactly is what.

I'm not sure, but I noticed the same thing on Ford's website as well as Accurate's - the motor home/RV engines are significantly more $$. The guy on the phone said he wasn't sure as he's just in sales. Ok.

So...might warrant some googling. They should be the same 2V engines and bolt to the same transmissions. I can't imagine the heads or cam are different. Maybe different rotating assembly or block?

Edit: it's mostly likely referring to the F53 chassis, which does use the 3v engine. That's my best guess.

Thinking out loud, if I caught it early enough (there's no rod knock, no valve tick), maybe a set of bearings can save it, and it looks like you can do that just by pulling the pan.

Might be worth a weekend and $200 to go that route first.
