Some E350's have Hydroboost brakes, these are powered from the powersteering pump rather than vacuum pump. I think these were vans with dual alternators from the factory.

Re: Vacuum Pump

We had the same last summer on a mountainous BC backroad. It was a scary stop standing on the peddle and pulling against the wheel for all I was worth, and a scary drive out of there as well.

I'd be interested to hear more about alternatives to the vacuum driven brake boost so that I never have to go through that again.

Re: Vacuum Pump

I've been having some squeaking for a while from the serpentine belt. Haven't been able to pin it down. Asked the dealer to have a look at it today when the SMB was in for regular service. They diagnosed a bad vacuum pump, $425 to replace. Sound about right?

Seems right, I am happy to dig up the invoice if you like.

Re: Vacuum Pump

Thanks for the offer, but no need. They have been straightforward with me on all the work they've done.

Re: Vacuum Pump

A new vacuum pump is $270, remanufactured about $100. I would say $425 is fair given how difficult it is to work on these vans. Here are some instructions I found online.

Re: Vacuum Pump

Vacuum pump failed today @111k miles. Luckily I was going slow when I noticed it. Bugger is tough to stop without boost assist!

Re: Vacuum Pump

Happened to me in Boron, CA on my way (1st day) to Utah for a week last August. I drove all the way back to Santa Barbara and got the dealer to fix it first thing Monday morning. Around $850. I left that same day and made the entire trip just fine. DON'T drive too close to the vehicle in front of you when you loose the booster!

Re: Vacuum Pump

On the 7.3's the pump is easy to replace. Mine first went out driving down hill on US Hwy 50 pulling a one yard cement mixer. Luckily it was empty. Started with a little clicking then clacking then failure. Pulling on the steering wheel and standing on the brakes is a good description. Replaced it with an oem Ford pump, made in Bulgaria or Hungary. Recently I had to replace it again. So, now I am thinking I about keeping a spare.
