Re: What kinda MPG are you getting?

Make: 2013 Ford
Model: EB50
Engine: V10
Transmission Type: 5 speed
4wd/2wd: Quadvan 4x4
Approx weight:At least 9k
MPG city: it sucks
MPG fwy: never gotten better than 9.5

My SMB is still new with only 10k miles. I don't drive it in town, mostly highway to get us on the beach. Can't seem to break the 10 mpg mark. Add some 4wheeling on the beach and my average can drop down to 7.5-8 mpg. My previous SMB was an 04 RB50 6.0 Quigley and averaged 12-13.5.

Its funny, whenever my wife and I hear a 6.0 we both look towards the sound then at each other and smile.
The V10 is a fuel hog, but sure is smooth and quiet.

Re: What kinda MPG are you getting?

Highway steady cruising on mostly level Interstates I get around 15 MPG if I can keep it at 70 MPH, and it drops to 14 MPG at 75 MPH. That's for older V10 with 4-speed and 3.73 gears. Also 2WD with stock-size Michelins. My van is set up for light camping which keeps weight at around 7,000 pounds and exterior aerodynamically clean.

If I only got around 10 MPG highway I'd find it difficult not to trade it for a small Class C. As I reported in a different thread a while back, last year I took a 5000 mile vacation from Texas to Yosemite and back in a rented 30-foot E-450 Class C which was 8-1/2 feet wide and almost 11 feet tall and I averaged just over 8.5 MPG. By comparison 10 MPG out of any van seems poor.

I'm hoping my next van can be coaxed near 20 MPG when driven conservatively on highways. Fortunately 4WD and/or off-road driving is not in my plans because it seems to kill fuel economy. And it's completely understandable. It's hard to compare the two on equal basis.

Thats amazing. I have an 05 E350 passenger van with the V10 and I only got 12mpg completely empty on my way home from buying it. Speed was kept at 70 or less. My gear ratio is 4.10 but I also have the torqueshift trans which is 5 speed.

I don't ever recall getting 12 MPG on a highway trip. The lowest I can recall was 13 MPG driving between Florida and Texas when I was in a hurry. Most of my driving is very flat.

I can't imagine your 5-speed wouldn't be as efficient, but know the 4.10 doesn't help compared to my 3.73. Regardless, it shouldn't make that much difference. Was your first trip hilly? How about wind? Also, I've found that stop and go traffic lowers MPG quickly. Holding a steady speed for hours at a time makes a big difference.

Re: What kinda MPG are you getting?

Nothing too hilly but it definitely wasn't a flat stretch all the way. I'll have to check again on my next trip. City driving is right around 10-11mpg, which is what I do most.

Re: What kinda MPG are you getting?

My wife and I just got back from a 5 week 7000 mile trip. I kept track of the miles with a gps (more accurate than my speedometer). I kept the speeds at 65 most of the time, going up to 70 once in a while. I just figured out the mileage, 14.54 mpg. My rig weight is just under 10,000 pounds.

Re: What kinda MPG are you getting?

My last tank included a few good size passes - Teton and Togwotee pass and a lot of rural 2 lane driving 60-65ish. Managed 16.5mpg for a loaded EB51 Quigley 4x4 w/ the 7.3L. Pretty darn happy, I'm running the Edge Tuner and custom 4" exhaust from downpipe back.
