What Tools For My Ford 6.0 EB50

Busy planning & making notes for my April/May arrival.

I have a new canvas & leather tool roll I will be taking from Australia to the US, to buy tools in US for SMB van.

What tools do you suggest to buy for my kit? Please.

Are you looking only for handtool recommendations, our would you also consider carrying a laptop and Ford specific software to provide a much greater chance at fault isolation? The software I'm thinking of is Auto Enginuity. Not inexpensive by any means though.

For hand tools, I have found these helpful. And the flex head version is helpful in the smaller sizes 6mm to 19mm, while the flex head is a little squirrely when you are applying alot of torque in the 20mm and larger sizes.

There is a special 4 pronged socket needed to service the front hubs......there are several varieties of this and they look very similar to each other......IIRC, they are around $15 or so.

They are available at many auto parts stores, although I have not picked one up yet, since I don't know exactly which one I need.

They look like this:

or this:

A $20 OBD-II scanner goes a long way when troubleshooting.

You'll probably want some sort or oil filter wrench if you don't already own an assortment of these.

Besides basic hand tools,
Injector Pressure Regulator socket: http://www.amazon.com/Lisle-68210-So.../dp/B0057Y5EFK
I'm no pro mechanic, but I have been pretty deep in my 6.0 and I'm glad I had that special socket. It's only for one thing, but that one thing costs $100 and is pretty critical.

48mm crow's foot (for the fan clutch nut). Not a tool special for the 6.0, but it really makes things easier when working on anything behind the fan.

x2 on some sort of code scanner. You may want to also pick up a few spare filters for everything that needs filtering.

Be sure you get a koozie to keep your beer cold. I don't know if you have those in OZ. You'll be drinking a lot of beer when you work on that engine.

A factory service manual is about the most useful tool there is. They're online, but hard copies are good to have too.

If your staying in the US for any length of time I'd sure look into the AAA premium card. A good bottle jack is handy also. I'm no mechanic so a sat phone has been worth it's weight... some of the new messaging devices look OK.

Much of what you carry depends on your skills and being I'm mechanic stupid and can't weld, my kit is fairly basic.

Stuff I've needed were a good set of impact sockets and a breaker bar (I quit packing a torque wrench). A Butane torch is great for a number of reasons and works great to light a cigar or fire as well. Test light and voltmeter come in there and is something I actually know how to use. I do pack some of the standard tools like in these articles:

I carry zip ties, 3M 70 & mastic tape, duct tape, hard setting silicon and AB Putty plus some tie wire.

I can't weld either, wish I could...something else to figure out........

The voltmeter is a great idea. Harbor freight sells them for $6 with a backlight and $5 without a backlight. Cheap enough to not worry about.

I pack BIC lighters in my motorcycle packs and the van for emergency use.
