When to Change Engine Coolant?

Everyone considering switching coolant should watch the video on fluids.

The basic synopsis is that most coolants are Ethylene Glycol based while the Ford Premium Gold coolant in the PSD is Propylene Glycol based. The two are incompatible and will form a gel if combined. Thus if you are switching you need to be very careful to make sure all of the old coolant is removed. Until my truck is out of warranty I will be using only Ford Coolant.

I just went ahead and had the engine coolant flushed and refilled with Motorcraft Premium Gold. I didn't feel the need to use Amsoil or anything else for this one, especially since I changed it way before the scheduled interval (30k miles versus 105k).

I had Bob's Brake & Alignment in Lawndale, CA do this work along with a bunch of other maintenance (torque maintenance, axle service, transmission service, atlas transfer case). Thanks for the recommendations on this place, they were great and definitely knew SMB's.

Hubert and Manny continue to get better with every service that they perform , and never guess at anything when in doubt they are on the phone with Fresno . Peter has commented a couple of times on the satisfaction realized with their service for those of us that don't have the time or desire to travel all the way to Fresno .

When I was last there a few months ago, Manny was no longer at BBA. He had moved out of CA. But nothing had changed with the quality of service or attention to detail. Hubert and another tech who's name I can't recall both stayed late to finish all my work.

I almost pooped my pants listening to him. He mistated Propylene Glycol for Ethylene Glycol. What he said is backwards. Zerex and Premium Gold have Ethylene Glycol not Propylene glycol. Read the bottle.

I herd this video using zerex G-05. Called Ford and told the mechanic my situation. Ethylene Glycol is correct and when looking on bottle itself...ethylene glycol.

Now the forum is misquoting the two.

Yellow stuff is correct.

I would rather use Amsoil but would hate anyone toping up my coolant. I guess that does not mix either.
