Trivia Q.: Why does fridge have a
d in the word, but refrigerator doesn't?
A: It's just a matter of not sounding like an inappropriate word. The root word,
frigidus, is Latin for cold and is where we get the word frigid. In
refrigerator, the g takes its soft
j sound. If you want to abbreviate that, take away the prefix
re and the suffixes
er at(e) or. Well, take those away and see the four letter word that you're left with. In order not to have that hard
g sound, you have to stick the
d in there to soften it to the softer
j sound. Otherwise, we'd sound like a bunch of perverts.
