+1 on the Jetboil. I have the Genesis Basecamp stove with the satellite burner. I use the satellite burner for coffee and the main burners for cooking. I like it enough that I picked up a MiniMo for non-car camping.

We've used this kettle with a 1000 watt inverter. Not as efficient as gas but works well if your batteries and/or alternator can handle it. It draws about 60A on the DC side.

If my math is correct, it takes about 3-4 AH or so to heat up a large cup (16oz) of coffee from 70 degF to 212 deg F. About 3AH to heat the water, and another AH for inverter losses and heat loss while heating.....roughly. assuming using one of those heating elements in the first post.

...in case anyone was wondering...taking a quick break from doing real work ...

For what it's worth, we keep one of those 1 cup 12 volt immersion heating elements in the van. It's not fast, but it works great rolling down the road when Laura wants a cup of tea and we don't want to stop. The 12 volt outlet is directly above the sink, the cup (often a hydro flask) gets braced in the sink (in case of bumps and spills), we plug it in and 10 or 15 minutes later her cup of tea is ready. It needs to be stirred once in a while when heating in the hydro flask because it is shallow and the hydro flask is comparatively deep, but it is simple and gets the job done in that circumstance.

We have on occasion used a ~800 watt Hotpot. 60-70 amp draw from the batteries. Heats a quart in about 5 minutes.

We heat water in the evening on the Colman stove and fill a thermos as well as doing dishes and other things. Getting water from thermos during the day is quick. SS thermos holds a quart.

Really do not like using anything that requires disposable canisters.
