Broken fold-out cabinet on door - HELP!

Help! The latch mechanism on my interior shelf has clicked into the closed position and I don't know how to fix it. I already tried with a screwdriver and managed to crack the outside a bit.

Where: it's the small fold-up table top on the cabinet affixed to the rear side door.

What: It's the j-shaped latching mechanism female end.

If so, you can pry it back up/out with long needle-nose pliers. I've got a pesky one on one of my doors too. If that's not it, try to post a photo.
