Cabinet materials

Hi everyone,
We are 27 days on the road, heading home from Alaska.

Is the stock white interior cabinets a formica type of covering or is it just paper? I got the wood which I figured was a veneer but it turns out to be just paper or something like that.

BTW, the Sportsmobile Sprinter has held up to over 600 miles of dirt road, pavement that should not be driven upon, 2-1/2 days in a ferry. The solar panels are great. We love it.

In 2010 we are going north to Inuvik and Tuktoyaktuk in Aug/Sep so we can catch some snow. Anyone want to go?

Regards,
Keith

Hi Keith,

The cabinet material that SMB is particleboard, or MFD.
Do a search on this site and you will find more info.
The particleboard is made by Patrick Industries.
The "finished surface" is a thin plastic, like a thick sticker.
Try not to let water penetrate the particleboard, or it will swell up and become weak.
With enough demand by customers, someday SMB will get real wood in their production lines.

What were the temps in Alaska? Any rain this time of year?

Very tempting Keith! I have flown into Inuvik for wilderness canoe trips but have only driven to Dawson City in my old Dodge Dakota pick-up.

Keep us informed of your 2009 travel plans.

My finish seems about as thick as a piece of paper. Sad.

It rained on us the first 10 days - Haines thru the Denali Highway. Then we got lucky - fair skies for the most part until we hit Hope, BC. Temps were sometimes hot in the daytime - 70's, nights got down to 28 with a hard frost in Chicken on the way home.

I am trying to update the blog but bandwidth was a real problem.

Regards,

Keith

09 we will probably be forced to stay in the US because of the economy. I would go to Alaska or the Yukon every year if possible. We have spent 0 time in south Alaska but the challenge of running to Inuvik and taking a plane for an overnight trip to Tuktoyaktuk sounds fun.

We also want to go back to the Arctic Circle and north to Prudhoe, catch a plane to Pt. Barrow.

So many places to go and so little time

Regards,

Keith

Hey Keith,

Sounds like you are having a great time!
That is what these camper vans are for!
Looks like many forum members have Ford vans, a few GMCs, but it is cool to hear from a Dodge Sprinter owner.

I was at SMB West in July and I saw a red 4x4 Sprinter van.
The word is that all the 4x4 parts are coming from many different sources, so SMB is challenged to make more of them.
Mercedes had a package for 2007, but then changed up and outsourced to different manufactures, so now for 2008, one is hard pressed to get the parts to fully convert a Sprinter to 4x4.

Tread lightly!
