Electric penthouse fuse

We previously talked about how to get a stuck electric penthouse top up or down. I asked SMB Fresno about this and Liz got back to me after talking with Heber about it. Heber said that there is not an over ride if the top should fail. He said that the company they buy the motors from says that they will not fail and SMB had not seen a motor failure ever on these tops. Liz said that it did get Heber's mind going and he was going to put some extra thought to this.

I also asked Heber where the fuse for the electric penthouse was located (I always want at least some basic information on things like that) and he told me that the fuse is located behind the switch that raises and lowers the top in an inline holder. The fuse is available from Napa parts stores as Part# 782-3013 or from the SMB parts Dept.

I went by our Napa store today and this is an unusual fuse that they don't normally carry in stock. He had to order it from their Sacramento warehouse. It cost about $11 and I doubt that we will ever need it but "better safe than sorry". I'll be picking it up in a couple of days...

Or slap in some copper wire...

(By copper wire of course I mean a handy dandy universally fused jumper wire, which I just now thought of, because seriously shouldn't any fuse the right amperage be acceptible in a pinch, or is there something special about this $11 fuse?)

John Kalmbach sent me an e-mail in which he mentions that "...the fuse is actually a 6 amp auto-reset circuit breaker with blade terminals that will fit into a typical ATC fuse location (inline or panel mounted). That is why the cost is so high."

John goes on to say "While there is not an easy way to lower the PH top if there is a mechanism or motor failure, most failures occurred when trying to raise the top and there was a load on the system. So, you are not stuck somewhere with a top that won't come down."

That is the situation I was concerned about...too much load and popping the circuit breaker. John did talk about how the get the top up in post #:

Of course, I didn't pay that much attention to that post back then since we didn't have an electric penthouse at the time...
