Better advice than this forum. Simple question turned into a propane vs Espar debate.

Re: Espar Hydronic Maintenance

Those heaters do not really need maintenance. They only make trouble when they're not used regulary, i.e. once a month.
If you need to overhaul a unit, that's no rocket science and can be done DIY. I still have mine (Webasto Thermo Top C) laying on the workbench waiting to be installed as soon as the frost bite gets warmer around here. Not having a heater in the shop is kinda contraproductive in winter, though.
Failure #1 with them is a clogged/kinked fuel line (only 1.5mm dia) and non working fuel pump. Other then that check for air pockets in the coolant lines.
The whole "maintenance" you can do is changing the glow/spark plug, the fuel fibre mat and check the combustion chamber. The fan and coolant pump can be changed easily if they stop working.
Usually a good cleanup and a new fibre mat and glow plug do the job.
Having said all that, the Thermo Top will only heat my stock vehicle cooling / HAVC system. I'll install an Airtronic heater for the living quarter as I don't want to add just another LPG tank to the van.

BTW, does anyone have the dia of the fuel return line of a 5.4 van ?

Re: Espar Hydronic Maintenance

Espar is back to normal after Rixen's replaced the blower motor for a total cost of $329. Great company to work with, highly recommend them.

I reviewed the installation instructions and Espar recommends tilting the fuel pump 15-35 degrees. Sportsmobile had it at 0. Don't think this caused the blower motor to burn out but decided to correct it. Simple fix, just bent the bracket.

This is what the D5 is supposed to sound like!

Re: Espar Hydronic Maintenance

That was a requirement from day one. The exhaust length & kinks was where they screwed up on mine.
