Flat Plate Heat Exchanger, 2007 SMB

After nearly 13 years, I believe my flat plate is gone bad. I see and smell coolant in the water out of my sink faucet. Only thing odd is that the water tint is rust colored rather than the greenish coolant I see in my overflow tank. Has anyone found the best replacement unit?

Just after purchasing one online, I heard back from SMB West stating that I need a double wall flat plate. What is that? I looked at close to 40 different units online and never saw any were labeled as double wall.

Yes, you will want a double wall. The double wall flat plate heat exchanger has a tiny air gap between the two fluids. The air gaps will have a drain on the bottom that in the event of a leak, the leaking fluid will drain out and not contaminate the other fluid. Double wall units aren't quite as efficient at heat transfer and are typically more expensive. I can't recommend a replacement as I removed mine and separated my water system after the poisoning incident of 2010.

Thanks, Eric. Apparently they don't work that well to avoid contamination as that is exactly my problem. I'll be installing the one I bought and will keep the double wall unit in mind for the next replacement.
