Garage
Any unvented solution (including the stove) is going to add moisture to the air. They can also start generating carbon monoxide if the oxygen level gets too low, which is why the stove says 'not for comfort heating.'

Whichever method you settle on I suggest installing a CO alarm for peace of mind.

Thanks for all the heater suggestions folks. At some point in the future if I keep the van it would be cool to try and fit an espar heater in here, maybe in place of the suburban hot water heater?

Sorry for the late update. I ended up repairing the pump. The "cap" I was referring to turns out to be the pressure switch. When the pressure drops below a certain point, the switch depresses, the water pump runs until the pressure builds enough to press the button again. The problem was that water was getting past the seal/diaphragm that pushes onto the plastic switch on the other side of it. I cleaned up all the surfaces, added a layer of tape for a bit of extra pressure along the ridge of the seal, bolted it back up and no leaks. Here are some pictures.

But now I've noticed a different problem. The pump seems to be seeping out a salty goo at the metal/plastic interface, lower down on the pump than above. I think this was always happening but might be getting worse. Picture:

Anyone seen this before?

The white gunk looks like mineral deposits. They come from water evaporation. My guess is that the pump is seeping water that is then evaporating. Does your pump come on with no water use? If so there is probably a seep.

Nope, it doesn't run at all unless I use the water. Perhaps that wasn't the best picture. It's not the white mark at the front of the picture, but further back along the perimeter. It's literally sticky goo. I've wiped it off, but I'm sure it will make more haha.

There's a better picture of the goo it's growing along the plastic cap. Even though the pump isn't running without use, it's definitely seeping very slowly as the carpet underneath it is damp again...

Someone in another thread said it's possible to just take apart and clean up. I'm pretty sure when I was dealing with the pressure switch leak I never took off the entire black plastic piece.

I'm thinking it's time to replace it as I don't want to deal with this again. My old model Shurflo 2088-403-144 no longer exists. It is 2.8gpm, 40psi and 4amp. It looks like 4008-101-E65 (2 year warrantyor A65 1 year warranty) are the newer models, but I can still find some 2088s online. The old one did last upwards of 26 years...

What new Shurflo model do you guys recommend as a replacement?

That "goo" looks like mold.
If so get a new water pump and clean the area extremely well.
