Re: Propane Hot Water question?

Thanks for the help with the winterizing. Now I am headed south and out of the cold, so I have refilled my tank. When connected to city water everything works great. However, when I disconnect from city water and run the water pump it pumps continuously but I do not get any water. The tank is full. Any suggestions on what might be going wrong?

Re: Propane Hot Water question?

The city water fill valve is open. Shut the valve and the pump can build pressure.

Re: Propane Hot Water question?

Yep, sounds like an open valve (fill or drain), but also make sure there isn't a a knob/lever to change from city to fresh water.

Re: Propane Hot Water question?

Thanks for the input. I have tried with the city fill valve in both directions. how long will it take to build pressure. I left it running for at least 5 min in each direction. The drain valve that I used to drain the tank a few months ago is definitely closed.

Re: Propane Hot Water question?

It should only take a couple of seconds to build pressure. Next possibility is a bad pump diaphragm.

agreed with Ford_6L_E350. You can get a ShurFlo 2.8 gpm pump for about $100. I would pull out your pump and just check it with a hose and bucket of water to see if it's pumping but otherwise it's a cheep fix to buy a new one.

I chased down the exact same problem last week. After removing the back seat so I could get a good look at all of the valving, I decided the pump had simply lost prime. After running the pump off of a bucket of water (to make sure there wasn't a problem with the pump itself) and hooking it back up it's now running fine.

Re: Propane Hot Water question?

Priming my pump tonight proved a pain. Ran the pump for a minute no water and heard a light click and it stopped. Thought it could be a thermal switch that resets once cool. No luck. Checked the 10 amp fuse. It is fine. The directions say to bypass the pressure switch but the hot leads go into white plastic rectangular piece that goes into the unit. I tried gently to remove but not able to. Should I use pliers. Where to go from here? Did I fry my pump running it unprimed? Frustrating. Appreciate any insight.

Re: Propane Hot Water question?

Removed the pump from the system and turned it upside down. It ran. Go figure.

Loosened the screen filter of the pump to Prime it. No forward flow. Disconnected the out side and It primed and flowed. Could be a sticky outflow valve after a cold season and water will force open the valve and air pressure is insufficient.

Re: Propane Hot Water question?

How long it takes depends on your system, but 5 minutes should have it coming out the tap at the very least.

When the valve switching from city water is open, the pump pumps directly back into the tank so it is just a cycle.

Firsts, are you sure you're closing the city water valve? It's usually a gray plastic oval handle. Mine is under the seat in front of the water tank.

Next to check is if water is moving in the tank, meaning it's getting cycled back in- a flashlight might help, or you can feel the side of the tank for sort of a gushing water feel (since the pump will be running and making noise).

Another thing is to open a tap and see if you hear air or get water.

Last (or first if it's convenient) hook up to city water. Test you faucet and when the tank and all lines are full, shut off your city water valve (the gray one not the city water itself):
If the tank keeps filling the valve is bad, it's happened enough to me I finally put a steel ball valve in.
If the tank stops filling, the city water is pressurizing your lines. With the faucets off it should be fully pressurized, so switch the pump on and it shouldn't run.
