Hi Folks -

Looks like I'm going to have to replace the original water pump on my '05 Ford EB-350 (boo) ... looks like I might have had some winter freezing damage.

Anywho - here's the question - what's the white plastic gizmo between the inlet line, and the pump itself ... strainer? check valve? ....

Anybody replaced one of these older models lately? Any tips would be greatly appreciated! Mine is located under the driver side bed between the water tank, and the inverter.

Joe, That is a filter/strainer for larger particulates.

The new Shurflo's are good. Looks like you have a pressure sensing pump.

What is it doing (or not doing) that makes you think it is damaged by freezing?

Water is dripping around the seals of the pump housing (at the bottom) when the pump is turned on, and keeps the pump 'burping' every few minutes... it's not a gusher, but it IS right next to the inverter

It could be as simple as removing the screws and checking / cleaning the seal and reassembling with a bit of faucet silicone. Or, it could be a cracked case / housing. The big question, for me, is it better to replace if I am going through all the effort to pull and check the part.

These pumps are actually very robust. I have cleaned and reassembled them and they usually stop leaking and work fine. A bit of silicone (flexible gasket type) and being careful with tightening the screws, tight but not too tight, works if the case is not cracked. If the pump cover is cracked, parts are available for repairing. And rebuild kits are around. Again, it is just what is worth the time and effort when a new pump is around $100.

Re: right next to the inverter - Yeah, I have NEVER understood why SMB did this in many of their builds. It is a situation where a water system failure/leak can cause really serious damage.

What's wrong with it?

Mine had a leak and slow flow. It was an easy fix. These pumps can be taken apart and repaired pretty easily. You can search on YouTube for your symptoms and see if there's a fix. Here's some examples
