Starcoll III Solenoid
Hello Everyone...
First off thanks for all the info - this forum has been a huge help. I've not made many posts but I do plan to circle back and chronicle the various fixes I've made to my 2003 GMC SMB since we bought it in Winter 2011.
My latest project was to replace the two aux fans in the starcool system. The super kind folks at the Indiana plant gave me the info I needed to source that fix - a lifetime on a small key in Florida had completly eroded away the pot metal for the fan motor housing(up under the van) - it was like dust. The one up behind the grill was not much better. Both were frozen solid and had blown their fuses. Pulling the fuses allowed me to establish that the compressor still worked... albeit for only a few minutes before the lack of the two fans caused it to freeze up.
With the fans replaced, the system is now working in both modes - which is nice because we're headed to a South Carolina beach in August.
In running the 110 system on test, I noticed that the starcool solenoid behind the grill gets a little hot. It gets about as hot as a cup of coffee. You can touch it but not for long. It has not scorched the label on the housing and the housing has not deformed. Seems to stay there at that temp. during continued use.
Wondering if anyone knows if this is normal or if I need to be worried about it failing / If I need to dig into the wiring further. I've had ground issues galore due to corrosion.
Thanks again!
